Imagine the most iconic mountain in Nepal. Mt. Manaslu (8th highest mountain in the world at 8156m) will top this list. It is clearly what we imagine a mountain to look like with its distinctive appearance located in a distant region in the vast Tsum Valley (Hidden Valley).
This trek circumnavigates Mt. Manaslu and passes through the far-reaching areas of Tsum Valley at an altitude of 1905m to 5093m, rich in Tibetan culture, traditions, and ancient art and mostly unaffected by modern civilization.
On this trek, you will be exposed to the ancient customs of Tibetan Buddhism while appreciative of their unique daily rituals and lifestyle in these far-off and relatively untouched regions of Nepal.
Tsum Valley is encircled by Boudha Himal and Himal Chuli in the west, Ganesh Himal in the south and Siringi Himal (7187m) in the north. The trail heads through two major villages in the region, Chumling (Lower Tsum) and Chhaikampar (Upper Tsum). The valley is rich in Tibetan culture with many Mani walls, chortens and prayer flags along the trail and houses some of the holiest of Tibetan monasteries where the famous sages Guru Rinpoche and the Tibetan philosopher Milarepa once meditated in nearby caves. It is a place where the trekker can learn about oneself and discover peace through meditation.
We begin our adventure with a drive from Kathmandu to Arughat where our trek begins. The trail takes us past the numerous cultivated fields and through small villages as we negotiate the Budhi Gandaki Valley along the riverbanks until we reach Lapubesi Village. The trail takes us to the therapeutic hot springs of Tatopani passing through forests on the way there. It is not long before you can see the enormous mountain ranges, such as Sringi Himal on the way to Philim. We pass Chumling Village and then continue on the trail to Gumba Lungdang Pass while walking through pine and rhododendron forests before we have to cross the Siyar Khola (river). We then continue on to the Ganesh Himal Base Camp and to Lokpa. The trail then heads to Lokpa, Ghap and to Lho as we pass through several Gurung and Thakali villages. At Samagaun we stop for the day to better acclimatize before climbing to higher altitudes. Leaving Samagaun we head up to Samdo, Dharamsala and cross the Larke La Pass (5,106m) and on to Chame where the trek ends.

If time permits we will guide you around Thamel and help you buy some necessary equipment you may require on your trek. There will be a short briefing about our trek, with ample opportunity to answer any questions you may have.
After early morning breakfast, you drive to Soti Khola on a land cruiser. You will follow the Budhi Gandaki River towards the northern side and pass through Morder and Simre villages. It will be bumping and winding dirt road drive which will take around 7-8 hours. Tonight we will stay at Soti Khola. Breakfast, lunch & dinner included.
Today we drive from Kathmandu to Soti Khola driving through Dhading Beshi and Arughat. The road deteriorates and is quite rough and bumpy from Dhading to Arughat. This afternoon we follow a trail through the woods heading upriver along the banks of the Budhi Gandaki River and then across the mountains from where we have frequent views down to the river far below. Tonight we will stay at a guesthouse at Machha Khola.
Today we cross the Machha Khola River and pass Khorlabesi (920m) before arriving at Tatopani, famous for its therapeutic hot springs. The trail then passes through a forested area as we make our way to the Dovan Khola (river) and to the Budhi Gandaki Valley. As we head higher you will notice a change in the vegetation right up until we arrive at Jagat Village where we will stay at a guesthouse overnight.
Today we head off on a 6-hour trek, first reaching Salleri where we have magnificent views of Mount Sringi before descending to Sirdibas, a traditional Buddhist village. The trail continues until we reach Lokpa Village, just north of Philim and then go through Ekle Bhatti and climb to a ridge along a trail through a pine forest. We come to a junction where we take the trail heading to Tsum Valley. We stay the night at Lokpa.
Today we have a 5-hour trek ahead of us to Tsum Valley. The first sights of Tsum Valley appear as we head down to along with mountain Chumling Village. We then climb up to Ripchet and a short time later reach the authentic Buddhist village of Chumling, well known for its ancient monastery, traditional Tibetan style houses, prayer flags, mani walls, and its stone-paved streets. We stay here overnight.
Today we start our 5-hour trek by crossing a suspension bridge where we have amazing views of the Ganesh Himal. The trail continues and takes us past Rainjam and across Seru Khola before arriving at Gho Village. After a total of 5 to 6 hours trekking, we reach Chokhangparo Village from where we have views of Himalchuli (7893m) and Ganesh Himal (7140m). We stay here tonight. Breakfast, lunch & dinner included.
Today’s trek of 6 to 7 hours follows the trail to Rachen Gompa and to the Shir Khola (river). After leaving the river we pass by Phurbe and Pangdun villages before arriving at Nile where we stay the night. Mu Gompa is the largest monastery in the region and the highest point in the Tsum Valley. Breakfast, lunch & dinner included.
From Gompa, the descent begins. We descend to Rachen Gompa, then Chhule and reach Phurbe. Rachen Gompa lies in the border area of Nepal and Tibet, and it sits surrounded by humongous mountains. But the destination for this day takes you through a forested area and finally at Chhokangparo.
After breakfast, we descent from Chhokung Paro continues as we reach Gho. You will be crossing a suspension bridge near Gho and hiking forward to reach Rainjam Village. We leave Rainjam village, descend to Tsum Valley and finally reach Chumling - our destination for the day.
Today we have a 6 to 7-hour trek ahead of us as we descend from Chumling to Lokpa after first crossing a suspension bridge. The trail follows a rocky ridge where we have a great view of Sringi Himal. We then pass through Ghatta Khola passing by farms growing maize, millet, potatoes, and vegetables. As we continue we follow the trail along the bank of the Budhi Gandaki passing through a bamboo forest before coming to the Deng River. Tonight we stay at Deng next to the river.
Today we initially have a steep climb and then have to head back down to the Budi Gandaki River. The trail heads through the valley and past several small settlements. As we get nearer to Namrung you will see Mani stones (stones with carved with Tibetan mantras) a reminder that we are venturing into territory occupied by Tibetan Buddhists. In the afternoon we will take a short and interesting detour to Prok village (2 hour round trip) and then follow the trail to Namrung for our overnight stay at a guesthouse.
We is like stepping back in time today as we walk between the Mani stone walls of Lho Village, a place where there are few signs of modernity. From Lho we can see the snow capped peak of Ngadi Chuli (7871m aka Peak 29). Another short detour takes us up to the Pungen Glacier from where we have stunning close-up view of Mt. Manaslu. We will stay overnight at a guesthouse in Samagaun.
At these higher altitudes it is necessary to get acclimatized, for at least one day, before attempting climbs to higher altitudes. Health specialists suggest that you move about and don’t sit idly. A good way to stay active is to explore the gompa at Pugyen(4070m), a one day hike that leaves the trail between Syaula and Sama. If time permits, it is possible for you to carry on up this valley to the rugged rocks and terrain of the Pugin glacier. Another option is a trip to the lake at Birendra Tal (3450m) and a demanding ascent to Manaslu Base Camp (4900m). It is believed that north of Birendra Tal is Milarepa's Cave (famous Buddha) claimed to have been used as a meditation retreat by the Buddhist saint. Breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Today the trail descends and heads back to the Buri Gandaki River passing the junction of Birendra Tal and Manaslu Base Camp. The valley expands before reaching Kermo Khadka and then continuing to the white Kani Gateway signaling the entrance to Samdo (3860m). If time permits we may trek to the peak above the village for impressive views of Mount Manaslu. If it is necessary to further acclimatize, there is a 6 t0 7 hour trek climbing 640m to the moraine of the Fukang Glacier, where you will be rewarded with far-reaching views towards several passes used by locals to cross over into Tibet. Breakfast, lunch & dinner included.
A relatively short day sees us descending through fields prior to starting our climb towards the Larkya-La Pass, a trek offering dazzling views of Manaslu and the Syacha Glacier, and a likelihood of spotting Himalayan blue sheep on your trek to Dharmashala (4480m). This is as high as we go today without risking altitude sickness. This is the last safe haven before reaching the pass. This sector of the trek is often subject to snowfall and from mid-December to mid-March, when snow blocks the Larkya-La Pass, the Samdo Lodge is typically closed. Your guide will know in advance if the lodge is closed. Breakfast, lunch & dinner included.
We have a tough day ahead of us as we take the trail via Larkya La Pass (5106m/17,121 ft) to Bhimthang. We first have to climb to Cho Chanda and then up to the steep snow covered pass. The views of many surrounding peaks are truly exceptional from this high altitude vantage point. The Himalayan mountains of Himlung Himal (7126m), Cheo Himal (6820m), Gyaji Kung (7030m), Kang Koru (698m) and Annapurna II (7937m) are clearly observable from the pass. We then descend a steep trail and trek across moraines until we come to Bhimthang Village where we will stay at a guesthouse overnight.
Today we descend from high pasture land and then cross the Dudh Khola (river) on a suspension bridge. Along the trail we head through rhododendron (flowering in spring) and oak forests. After trekking for 6 to 7 hours we come to Dharapani in the Annapurna region. This is also a common gateway to the Annapurna circuit trek. If you are thinking of extending your trek, then we can head along the Annapurna trail. Tonight we stay at a guesthouse in Dharapani.
This is our final day on the trail of our Manaslu Circuit trek. Across the river, we will take a local jeep to Besisahar and then a bus back to Kathmandu where you will be taken back to your hotels.
You will leave Nepal, but will never forget this great adventure and the laughs you shared on this journey to some of the world’s most spectacular peaks. The following information will give you some idea about what you need to bring for the trek. It is important you do not forget the essential items, as this will determine your comfort and safety on the trek. Equally important is that you do not burden yourself with unnecessary equipment on the trek.
Toiletries (tissues, toilet paper, moisturizer, lip balm, sunscreen, sanitary pads, hand sanitizer, nail clippers, a small mirror, toothbrush, toothpaste, glasses, contacts, etc.)
You will be accommodated in 3-star hotels in Kathmandu. During the trek, we will be staying at lodges/ teahouses. You may find comfortable and better quality teahouses at lower altitudes. It should be noted that at higher elevations the quality of accommodation may not be as good, with more basic rooms with the bare necessities.
In Kathmandu, your hotel includes breakfast, whereas all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be provided during the trek. A staple food in the mountainous regions is potatoes, oats, buckwheat, Sherpa stew and Tibetan bread. Sherpa’s’ started farming potatoes when the first seeds were introduced to the region in the early 90s. There is a limited choice of food at higher elevations and except many potato dishes. Potatoes are high in carbohydrates – an excellent source of energy needed at high altitudes.
Some days can be challenging where you often have to walk 6-8 hours a day. You don’t need past experience of hiking or trekking but if you have done any kind of trekking activities then it is always a plus! We have met people from all walks of life, shapes, and sizes who have completed the trek. The only difficult part is when altitude sickness strikes and the effect that it can have on your body. Before leaving for Nepal it is good if you can prepare yourself physically by increasing your stamina and oxygen intake.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is usually done in autumn (Sept. to November) and spring (March to May) when you are much more likely to get to have crystal clear views of the mountains and can also enjoy the lush vegetation in the lower regions of the trail - particularly during spring..

We use a private car for sightseeing and for the airport to hotel pick and drop off. We take the bus from Bensisahar to Kathmandu. In the past Aarughat used to be the starting point of the trek but nowadays, due to better road conditions we can travel by bus direct to the Soti Khola. We will travel along secondary (rough) roads all the way to Soti Khola by local bus and from Dharapani to Besishahar we will be traveling by private jeep
