If you prefer a less crowded and more peaceful location, then this trek in the isolated Langtang Valley is just the place. The 10 day Langtang Valley trek is within the Langtang National Park, a land of natural untouched beauty that became Nepal’s first Himalayan national park in 1976. This region is inhabited by the Tibetan Buddhist Tamang people and is not far from Kathmandu which cuts back on travel time in order to reach this spectacular region. The mountain views and the warmth of the Tamang villagers make this one of the most pleasant trekking destinations in Nepal. Many homes, businesses and villages were destroyed after the 2015 earthquake and brought to an end their income derived from tourism. The resilience and resolve of these people has now rebuilt their economy with tourists now returning to this striking region.
The Langtang National Park is composed of 25% forest, and ranges from subtropical to high alpine terrains, and includes oak, maple, pine, and rhododendron forests. You will see various native animals, such as the Himalayan black bear, Himalayan Tahr, Assam macaque and red pandas on the trail. It is also said to be the home of the Yeti.
One of the highlights of this trek is the sacred Hindu Gosainkunda lakes where many pilgrims visit in August of each year. This area is also important to Buddhists who come to visit the renowned Kyanjin Gompa (Buddhist monastery). The trek begins at Syabru Besi Village and then crosses high alpine pastures where Yaks graze and passes through dense forests until arriving at Kyanjin Gompa. A trek up to Kyanjin RI (peak), offers a panoramic 360-degree view of the Himalayan Mountains before you descend through the valley and then return to Kathmandu.
Rhododendron and bamboo forests, cascading waterfalls and impressive snow-covered peaks are just some of the various attractions of this trek to the Langtang Valley. Trekking in this scenic valley will cause you to admire the spirit of these hardy Tamang mountain people and their daily survival in this merciless terrain. Fewer tourists visit this region and hence you trekking experience will be more peaceful.
Sherpa Expedition Teams will take care of all permits, meals and accommodation on the trek. This trek can be taken all year round.
Upon arrival at Kathmandu Airport you will be met by Sherpa Expedition and Trekking staff and transported to your hotel, followed by a short briefing concerning your trek.
Leaving Kathmandu we set off on a seven-hour journey by road heading to the Langtang Valley. As the road climbs out of Kathmandu Valley we will be afforded views of the Annapurna Mountains in the west and directly ahead to Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, and the numerous peaks in the Langtang region. We first come to Trishuli Village and then continue climbing until we reach Dhunche and enter the Langtang National Park. After leaving Dhunche we drive for another hour downhill until we reach Syabru Besi where we stay the night.
The trail today takes us across the Bhote Kosi (meaning Tibet River) which flows from Tibet. The trail then climbs through sub-tropical forest and then joins the trail coming from Syabru Besi, and then ascends through oak and rhododendron forests. On the trail it is very likely we will encounter Langur monkeys in the tree tops. The trail continues up a steep incline before reaching the Lama Hotel where we stay the night.
The trail today heads uphill and on the way offers fantastic views of Langtang Lirung (7227m). At the village of Ghora Tabela (3000m) the trail comes out of the forest and gives us stunning views of the mountains loom on both sides of the valley. The trail then follows an uphill path and then opens up to a wide valley where Yaks graze in pastures during summer. As we continue we come to Langtang Village, devastated by the 2015 earthquake, that is now a pile of rubble. Many locals and tourists lost their lives here. Another half-hour and we reach Mundu where we stay the night.
From Mundu we follow the trail climbing higher through pastureland as the valley opens up offering more extensive views of the enormous snow-clad peaks. We then cross several small rivers and moraines before reaching Kyanjin Village where there is a cheese factory and small monastery. We arrive here before lunch giving us time to explore the village and for those with energy to spare they can head further up the valley towards Langshisha Kharka for some spectacular views. We stay here for the night.
Today you can choose to lounge around and explore the surrounding area or alternatively follow a trail up the moraine to see the breath-taking views of the ice faces and glaciers of Langtang Lirung, or ascend Kyanjin Ri that lies right behind the village where you will have panoramic views of the Langtang peaks. Tonight we stay at Kyanjin.
On Day 7, start early for a challenging hike to Tsergo Ri, a stunning peak at 5,033 meters. From this summit, you'll enjoy panoramic views of the Langtang range, with its towering snow-covered peaks. After soaking in the scenery, begin your descent back to Lama Hotel, following the same trail you came. This trek will take 7-8 hours, passing through picturesque forests and rugged terrain as you make your way down to the valley below.
Today we continue down the trail among forested areas in the quiet mountains until reaching Syabru Besi. An alternative route is to take the route from Rimche via Sherpa Gaon to Syabru Besi, a longer route but with better scenery.
Today we travel by road from Syabru Besi to Kathmandu along a winding road with fantastic views of deep gorges, lush hillsides and terraced farmland at every turn. On arrival at Kathmandu, you will have time to do some last-minute shopping and explore the city.
Today Sherpa Expedition and Trekking will take you to the airport about 3 hours prior to departure. You will take with you some unforgettable memories of Nepal and on your flight home think about your next journey into the amazing Himalayas.
The following information will give you some idea about what you need to bring for the trek. It is important you do not forget the essential items, as this will determine your comfort and safety on the trek. Equally important is that you do not burden yourself with unnecessary equipment on the trek.
Toiletries (tissues, toilet paper, moisturizer, lip balm, sunscreen, sanitary pads, hand sanitizer, nail clippers, a small mirror, toothbrush, toothpaste, glasses, contacts, etc.)
You will be accommodated in 3-star hotels in Kathmandu. During the trek, we will be staying at lodges/ teahouses. You may find comfortable and better quality teahouses - having attached bathroom at lower levels- until you reach higher elevations, where the accommodation is more basic with bare necessities.
In Kathmandu, your hotel includes breakfast, whereas all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be provided during the trek. A staple food of the Langtang regions is potatoes, oats, buckwheat, Sherpa stew, and Tibetan bread. Sherpa’s’ started farming potatoes when the first seeds were introduced to the region in the early 90s. There is a limited choice of food at higher elevations and except many potato dishes. Potatoes are high in carbohydrates – an excellent source of energy needed at high altitudes.
We use a private car for sightseeing and for the airport to hotel pick and drop off. We use public transportation or local buses during the trek.
This can be an easy trek where you often have to walk 5-6 hours a day. You don’t need past experience of hiking or trekking but if you have done any kind of trekking activities then it is always a plus! We have met people from all walks of life, shapes, and sizes who have completed the trek. The only difficult part is when altitude sickness strikes and the effect that it can have on your body. Before leaving for Nepal it is good if you can prepare yourself physically by increasing your stamina and oxygen intake.
