MERA PEAK CLIMBING 7 DAYS

Enjoy the excitement of standing on one of Nepal’s most famous trekking peaks: Mera Peak (6476m). This 7-day high-altitude journey is designed for adventure seekers in pursuit of an authentic Himalayan challenge with stunning views of the highest mountains on earth. Brought to you by the experienced team at Sherpa Expedition, it is a great mix of exceptional logistics and impressive mountains that is a mountaineer's dream.

Your trip begins with a memorable flight to Lukla, the airport where we will land to start your Everest trek. From there, you’ll skip the regular days-long approach by hopping in a helicopter to Kothe, leaving you ahead of the curve and conserving your energy for the strenuous effort ahead.

Arriving in Kothe, the real journey starts. You’ll hike through colorful rhododendron forest and pristine alpine meadows, gradually making your way down to Thangnak. This pint-size mountain hamlet sits under the gaze of heavy Himalayan walls. Each rise brings more stunning views of defying, towering peaks, preparing you for the push to Khare, the ultimate launching pad before the summit. Khare not just serves as a springboard for daredevil Mera Peak, but also a respite to acclimatise, re-energise, and psyche up for the gruelling task ahead.

A day for acclimatisation, “rest day” in Khare for safety as well as getting used to breathing in thin air. It will also be the occasion for practical lessons on how to use some of the most important mountaineering tools — crampons, ice axes, harnesses, and ropes. Our professional Sherpa guides will instruct you in essential glacier travel and safety skills to give you confidence as you prepare for your summit bid.

Beyond Khare, the ascent rises to Mera High Camp, where you will be ready for your summit amid a world of snow and ice. With its jagged ridgelines and glacial plateaus, the high camp is imbued with a raw, remote spirit that serves as the threshold to the summit.

You will start out in the wee hours … typically around 3:00 in the morning, under a star-jammed night sky. The climb is several hours long, with steady progress over snowy slopes and crevassed glaciers. Near the summit, as dawn approaches, one of the most unforgettable panoramas in the Himalayas awaits you. From the summit of Mera Peak, you’ll see five of the world’s Top Ten highest mountains: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Cho Oyu, all clustered together in a long sparkling panorama of the Himalayas.

Once you summit and celebrate, you’ll descend into Khare and make your way back home knowing you’ve accomplished one hell of an achievement. The journey ends with the return flight to Kathmandu, returning you to your daily life and the perfect chance to relive an amazing week.

ITINERARY

The adventure begins with a thrilling flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, known for its dramatic mountain airstrip. Upon arrival, you'll take a scenic helicopter ride to Kothe, a picturesque village located at an altitude of 3,580 meters. This helicopter ride is a great way to shorten the trek and experience stunning aerial views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks, ensuring that you’re fully rested and ready for the upcoming days of trekking.

Your trek starts today from Kothe to Thangnak, passing through beautiful alpine forests and along mountain rivers. This trek is moderate, taking about 4-5 hours, and gives you your first real taste of the Himalayan landscapes. Along the way, you'll be treated to views of nearby peaks and the tranquil beauty of the region. Once you arrive in Thangnak, you’ll settle into a teahouse or camp to rest and prepare for the days ahead.

Today, you’ll continue your trek from Thangnak to Khare, a small village located at an elevation of 5,045 meters. This shorter, 3-hour trek will help you adjust gradually to the increasing altitude. As you trek, you’ll pass through glacial valleys and witness the stark, breathtaking beauty of the Himalayan terrain. Upon arrival in Khare, you'll be able to take in the stunning views of Mera Peak and the surrounding mountains.

Acclimatization is essential for your safety and success on this climb, and today is set aside for rest and adjustment to the altitude. You’ll spend the day in Khare, allowing your body to adapt. You can take short hikes around the area to help with acclimatization, and your guides may offer helpful tips for the summit. Taking it easy today will help ensure you have the energy and stamina for the challenging days ahead.

Today’s trek takes you from Khare to Mera High Camp, situated at 5,700 meters. This is one of the more demanding days, as you'll be ascending to a higher altitude. The trek will take 4-6 hours, passing through rocky terrain and glaciers. Along the way, you'll notice a change in the landscape as you near the high camp. Once you reach Mera High Camp, you’ll rest, hydrate, and prepare your gear for the summit attempt the following day.

This is the highlight of the trek: summiting Mera Peak, standing at an elevation of 6,476 meters. The climb begins early, usually in the pre-dawn hours, to take advantage of the best weather conditions. The ascent involves navigating glaciers and snow-covered slopes, with spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Once you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with views of the world's highest peaks, including Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, and Kanchenjunga. After spending time celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend back to Khare, where a well-deserved rest awaits.

On the final day of the trek, you’ll make your way back to Kothe, retracing your steps through the scenic valley. After reaching Kothe, you'll take a helicopter back to Lukla, where you’ll catch a flight back to Kathmandu. The return flight offers a final chance to admire the breathtaking Himalayan views before heading back to the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you can relax, celebrate, and reflect on your incredible adventure.

GOOD TO KNOW

Altitude & Acclimatization

Mera Peak rises to 6,476 meters (21,247 ft), making it the highest trekking peak in Nepal. Due to the high elevation, acclimatization is absolutely essential. Our itinerary includes designated rest days and gradual elevation gains to help reduce the risk of altitude sickness. Spending time at Khare and undergoing basic high-altitude conditioning will help your body adapt more safely.

Physical Fitness Required

Although Mera Peak is classified as a non-technical climb, it still requires strong physical conditioning. The ascent involves walking on snow and ice with crampons, often for 6–8 hours a day. Trekkers should prepare with cardio training, strength workouts, and experience hiking at altitude if possible. Prior trekking experience above 4,000 meters is highly recommended.

Use of Climbing Gear

During the summit push, you’ll use mountaineering equipment such as crampons, harnesses, ropes, and ice axes. No prior climbing experience is necessary—our Sherpa guides provide hands-on training at Khare to ensure you're comfortable and confident using your gear on snow and ice.

Best Time to Climb Mera Peak

The most favorable seasons for Mera Peak expeditions are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). These months offer clear skies, moderate temperatures, and stable weather conditions, making summit success more likely. Winter and monsoon seasons are best avoided due to heavy snow, poor visibility, and increased risk of avalanches or flight delays.

Helicopter Transfer Advantage

Our itinerary includes a helicopter flight from Lukla to Kothe, which eliminates 2–3 days of strenuous trekking and helps you conserve energy for the summit climb. This smart time-saving addition also reduces your exposure to altitude in the early stages, increasing your chances of a safe and successful ascent.

Insurance Is Mandatory

Climbers are required to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking, emergency evacuation, and helicopter rescue. Without this, you may not be allowed to proceed with the climb, as safety is a top priority in remote, high-altitude environments like Mera Peak.

Experienced Sherpa Guides

All expeditions are led by certified Sherpa guides who have years of experience climbing in the Himalayas. Their local knowledge, technical skills, and mountain wisdom ensure both your safety and success. Sherpa Expedition takes pride in offering ethical, professional, and culturally respectful adventures.

Permits & Documentation

Mera Peak requires several official permits, including the Mera Peak Climbing Permit, Makalu Barun National Park Entry, and TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System). We handle all of this paperwork for you, ensuring a hassle-free experience from arrival to summit.
