ISLAND PEAK CLIMBING
Overview
This is a fantastic climbing expedition that takes you to the summit of "Island Peak (6,189m) situated between Amadablam and Lhotse mountains. This exciting adventure is jam-packed full of features and takes you to Everest Base Camp (EBC 5364m/17,594ft), Chhukung Glacier, Kala Patthar (5545m/18,192ft), Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,283ft) and along trails in the Sagarmatha National Park. Island Peak is also known as Imjatse in Nepali, and from its peak, you have awesome views of the Khumbu region, Nuptse, and the 8000m plus peaks of Lhotse, Lhotse Middle, Lhotse Shar and Cho Polu (6,734mt.) towering above the Lhotse Shar Glacier. In clear weather, you can also see Mt.Makalu (8,475m) in the east.
Kala Patthar is famous for its close-up views of the world's highest Himalaya Mountains, that include Chimbu, Pumo Ri, Lingtren, Khumbutse, Lola, Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Lobuche Peak. Island peak climbers must be physically fit and should have some experience in energetic outdoor activities. Beginners with a reasonable level of fitness can also manage this climb. Island peak is nevertheless a technical and physically challenging climb. On the journey to Island Peak we head through Khumbu Valley where we can see the evidence of the wonderful Sherpa culture.
Before climbing Island Peak there will be ample time to acclimatize at Namche Bazaar. This is a proper climbing experience and will satisfy those who picture themselves standing on the summit of a substantial 6189 meter peak looking down on the world. There is a saying that the journey is as important as the destination, which is true in this case as we head through many villages rich in Tibetan Buddhist culture and traditions.
Sherpa Expedition Teams will look after all the paperwork, such as climbing and trekking permits to Sagarmatha National Park and the permit from the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). We will provide all meals and accommodation along the route. We will also provide you with maps and experienced Sherpa guides to take you safely to the summit. We have more than 40 years (Est.1977) in this business and leave nothing to chance, thus making sure you have a safe and enjoyable journey.
Itinerary
From the time you arrive in Kathmandu, the capital and cultural city of Nepal, we will be there at the airport to greet you and take you to your hotel. After arriving at the hotel you will have time to explore Thamel and buy any necessities you require for your trek.
After an early morning start, you will be picked up at the hotel by our guide who will take you to the domestic terminal of Kathmandu airport. The flight from Kathmandu to Lukla takes around 35 minutes, time enough to take in the spectacular views of the Himalayas. After landing at Tenzing-Hilary airport you will meet your porter who will carry your luggage. You then begin your journey with a relatively easy trek passing a Kani (ceremonial gatehouse) before the trail descends then leads above Kyangma village with its large gompa (monastery) and school. We then continue to Cheplung village where the trail passes through community forest within sight of the Dudh Koshi River. After crossing the suspension bridge you climb across the ridge to Ghat and then passes a school and complex of Mani walls, Chortens and prayer wheels. After a short walk from Ghat, we reach Phakding. Overnight at a mountain lodge.
After breakfast, the trek crosses several suspension bridges over the Dudh Kosi River before passing through Tok-Tok, Bhenkar, and Monjo and then arriving at Sagarmatha National Park entrance gate where you will be required to buy a permit. After following the river bed for a few hours and after the last Hillary suspension bridge, there is a steep uphill trek to Namche Bazaar. Namche has a good selection of restaurants, a cyber café, pubs, post office, ATM and banks
This idyllic town is an ideal place for"acclimatization". Health specialists recommend we spend the day being active, rather than sitting idle. From Namche it is possible to take a short hike to Everest View Resort, Thame, visit Khunde or relax and explore Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar is the main center of the Everest (Khumbu) region and has government offices, ATMs, internet cafes, shops, restaurants, bakery, and a colorful market each Friday evening and Saturday. A short trek of only a hundred metres will help us to properly acclimatize. Our guides will also take us to the Tourist Visitor Center near the headquarters of the Sagarmatha National Park where we can observe an assortment of relics related to the first mountaineers to climb Everest, Sherpa culture and discover the varied plant and animal life of the Everest region.
The trek continues along the rapid flowing glacial waters of the Dudh Kosi with magnificent views of the mountains (Mt. Everest, Lhoste, Taboche peak, Amadablam. You eventually reach an altitude of 3,800 meters at Tengboche. At the Tengboche monastery are unbelievably ornate wall hangings, a 20-foot sculpture of various poses of the Buddha and musical instruments and robes of the Lamas. Our group will be taken to observe a prayer ceremony, either in the evening or in the morning, depending on how the trekking goes this day
The trek from Tengboche to Dingboche is only a short distance which we will most likely complete in the afternoon. The last hill into Dingboche, and at this high altitude, is challenging!. The trail then heads to the village of Somare (4020m) and then to Orsho, both of which have lodged. Later the trail divides, with the left trail heading up to Pheriche before crossing a suspension bridge and a steep climb to the village of Dingboche (4460m) with many good guesthouses.
It is sensible to spend another day acclimatizing before heading to higher altitudes. One way of doing this is to hike up to Chukkung Valley (4730m) and on to Island Peak (Imja Tes). Above Dingboche is Nagkartshang Gompa (a strenuous trek takes around 2 to 3 hours), or alternatively head to Pheriche for an afternoon lecture on altitude sickness. The trail to Chhukung leaves Dingboche heading to Bibr (4570m) and is surrounded by fabulous mountain Peaks: Taboche, Nuptse, Lhotse, the enormous flute-shaped pass of Amphu Laptsa Pass, Ama Dablam. Chukkung has several lodges and is the most popular spot for those climbing Island Peak. If trekkers feel better acclimatized they can head up a grassy slope towards the peak of Chukkung Ri (5550m) for a magnificent view of Makalu.
After breakfast, our trek starts with an easy walk towards Thukla before crossing the steep terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier and then passing through the boulder-strewn slopes as we ascend Chupki Lhara where we find clusters of stones with prayer flags placed by Sherpas as a memorial to Scott Fischer (American mountaineer), 10-time Everest summiteer Babu Chiri Sherpa (Nepalese Sherpa mountain guide) who perished on a mission to climb Mt. Everest. The path then continues to the Khumbu Glacier moraine and before us are many beautiful mountain peaks - Khumbutse, Lingtren, and Mahalangur Himal.
Our trek today takes us to the Mountain Peaks Base Camp passing next to the enormous Gorak Shep Lake. As we continue we see many Indian army mountaineers' memorials. At this stage of our climb the trial becomes confusing, making it necessary to stay close to our guide. At this higher altitude the trek is quite tiring, passing through loose rocky terrain and streams, remnants of old glaziers. were once glaziers until we reach Mountain Peak Base Camp. At Mountain Peak Base Camp is an array of vivid colored tents in contrast to the bleak grey surroundings, most noticeable in spring. From this location we get fantastic views of Nuptse, Khumbuste, and Pumori. We will then head to Gorak Shep for a well deserved night’s sleep.
In the pre-dawn darkness and cold temperatures (-10 to -14 C) and potentially cold winds we head off on today’s trek witnessing spectacular views of the towering peaks of Lingtren, Khumbutse, and Changtse in the east. It is not until we reach Kala Patthar that we have a panoramic 360 degree views – including the in-your-face view of Everest. This is a photographers dream come true! Tonight we sleep well and rest in Lobuche.
Once again, after breakfast, we trek via Khumbu through ice masses to Kongma La Base Camp at (5,000m/16,404ft). This section of our ascent to Kongma La pass is probably the most difficult part of our trek. Along the way there are many rock cairns draped in prayer flags marking the pass. On our decent we trek through Imja Khola where water from the slopes of Everest collect. After passing through this valley we descend to Chhukung a quaint summer settlement. After reaching Chhukung your guide will check his instruments and our equipment before our final climb to Chhukung. Instead of taking the route through Kongma La pass we may take an alternative route via Dingboche to Chhukung.
A fairly steep trek, initially heading east then south, is ahead of us as we climb to Island Peak Base Camp. is on a fairly steep path. We traverse a winding path on the southern flank of the mountain, before coming to a refreshing easier path alongside a stream. The route to Amphu Labtsa is in the southeast as we zigzag through the Imja Khola through rocky terrain on the south of Island Peak. Tonight we rest up at Island Peak Base Camp.
Although Island peak does not require technical expertise, it does however require strength and stamina. It does however require some basic skills and how to avoid mishaps. It is essential that we reach the summit before lunch, as in the afternoon it can be extremely windy. The path climbs hundreds of meters from the bottom camp before facing a sharp incline initially on a sandy trail before turning to grass, and finally over boulders. The path eventually narrows before entering a steep rock vale (narrow channel of rock). We finally, after many steps across and through the vale emerge on the other side Your guide, for safety reasons, may fix a rope to each climber to assist in climbing the final snowy slope to the ridge at the summit. The rope may often extend to 350m depending on the season and danger of crevices. Some of these crevices may be 2 to 3 meters across requiring the use of ladders. Once at the summit it is time to take out your camera and capture the magnificent views and get your breath back!. We will then descent to Chhukung, and with your guides, will celebrate our success.
Leaving Chhukung we return on the same path to Imja Khola heading up through the forest to Tengboche. If there is enough interest we can visit the nuns at their Tengboche residence. After lunch at Tengboche we descend along a path surrounded by alpine bush and juniper trees. After crossing the bridge over the Dudh Koshi watercourse, our path takes us to Dudh Koshi Gorge taking us through pine forests before finally reaching Sansa. On the way down we should keep our eyes peeled for glimpses of mountain goats, snow leopards, colorful pheasants, and other wildlife. After emerging from the forest we pass through Chorten before reaching the military camp at Namche Bazaar. Tonight we stay at Namche Bazaar.
The rocky path down is steep and it is advised to be cautious crossing this rocky landscape. We eventually cross the suspension bridges over the rapid flowing Dudh Koshi and its tributaries, where the path becomes flatter and easier to negotiate. After our arrival in Lukla we can stretch our aching legs and blissfully recall the exhilarating experiences of the last few weeks.
Today we take a morning flight to Kathmandu. In Kathmandu, we can reminisce and can shop for souvenirs. Our guides will steer you in the right direction and where to find some bargains!

Namche sits at 3,440m, and this is an important stop for acclimatization. On the way, you may catch your first glimpse of Mount Everest. Tonight, enjoy the comforts of a cozy teahouse and prepare for your upcoming days of exploration.
Acclimatization is key to ensuring your success at high altitudes. Today is a rest day in Namche Bazaar, but it’s not a day of complete rest. You’ll take a short hike up to Everest View Hotel for magnificent views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other majestic peaks. This hike also helps your body adjust to the altitude. Namche itself is a great place to explore, with local markets, bakeries, and shops to discover, along with an everest museum that showcases the region’s mountaineering history.
The trek today takes you along the high trails of the Khumbu Valley, with views of iconic peaks like Ama Dablam and Thamserku. As you trek through the villages of Tengboche, you’ll pass the famous Tengboche Monastery. After crossing a bridge, the trail continues upward to the serene village of Pangboche. Situated at 3,930m, Pangboche offers magnificent views of Everest and Ama Dablam. Tonight, stay in a local teahouse and enjoy the tranquility of this beautiful village.
On Day 5, you’ll leave the Pangboche valley and head toward Chhukung, located in the stunning Imja Valley. The trail begins with a gentle ascent, and the landscape around you gradually becomes more rugged and alpine. Along the way, enjoy expansive views of Island Peak, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse. After arriving in Chhukung, you’ll have time to relax and begin preparing for the more challenging days ahead. Chhukung offers a peaceful atmosphere, and it’s the perfect spot to rest and acclimatize further.
Today’s trek brings you closer to your goal: Island Peak Base Camp. The path from Chhukung to Base Camp is steep and rugged, as you begin crossing glacial moraines and boulder fields. As you gain altitude, the terrain becomes increasingly rocky and challenging. Upon reaching Island Peak Base Camp at 5,100m, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Island Peak and the surrounding peaks, including Lhotse and Makalu. The team will review your climbing gear, provide safety briefings, and prepare for your summit push.
This is the most challenging day of the expedition. You’ll begin your summit push in the early hours of the morning (around 1–2 AM) to take advantage of the colder and more stable conditions. The first part of the climb involves glacier travel, followed by fixed rope sections and steep, snow-covered terrain. As you reach the summit of Island Peak at 6,165m, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of the world’s highest peaks, including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Baruntse. After celebrating your success, descend safely back to Chhukung, where you’ll rest and recover after the long, demanding day.
After your summit, it’s time to head back down. First, you’ll trek to Dingboche, where you’ll have a short rest before catching a helicopter flight back to Lukla. The scenic helicopter ride offers one last aerial view of the mountains you’ve just conquered. From Lukla, take your return flight to Kathmandu, where your adventure concludes.

For your trek, we take a thrilling flight out of Kathmandu to Lukla, where you are greeted by extensive views of the Himalayas and the Everest region, including Mount Everest. From Lukla, you'll hike through the scenic Sherpa villages, thick forests, and along the rapids of the Dudh Koshi River as you make your way to further elevations. As you go, you'll visit places like the bustling Khumbu-region center of Namche Bazaar, and continue on to scenic high-altitude villages like Tengboche and Dingboche that have, on clear days, the best mountain views on the planet.

The ascent includes walking on a glacier, fixed rope sections, and a steep climb, but the reward is a view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and other towering peaks in the region from the summit.
After reaching the summit, you’ll descend to Chhukung before hopping on a scenic helicopter flight back to Lukla, a time saver that also provides another overhead perspective on the dramatic landscape. You will then fly back to Kathmandu from Lukla and end an amazing Himalayan journey.
A 9-day mission perfect for anyone wanting a short, sharp hit of the best of Nepal’s high mountains that combines cultural discovery, high-altitude trekking, and technical climbing , all with stunning Himalayan views.
Itinerary
Your adventure begins with an exciting mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, one of the most scenic short flights in the world. After landing, you’ll meet your trekking team and start your trek with a gentle descent through forested trails and Sherpa villages. The route to Phakding follows the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several hanging suspension bridges and offering views of lush hillsides and prayer stones. Overnight in a cozy teahouse in Phakding.
Today you’ll enter Sagarmatha National Park and follow a winding trail through rhododendron and pine forests. Crossing the famed Hillary Suspension Bridge, you begin the steep climb to Namche Bazaar. As you gain elevation, you might catch your first view of Mount Everest on a clear day. After the tough ascent, you’ll reach Namche Bazaar, the gateway to Everest and a vibrant Sherpa town filled with shops, bakeries, and mountain culture.
To prepare your body for the high altitudes ahead, you’ll spend the day acclimatizing in Namche. A short hike to the Everest View Hotel (3,880m) is recommended, where you’ll enjoy sweeping views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. You can also explore the Sherpa Culture Museum and the local marketplace. Acclimatization is key to a successful summit later in the trip.
Leaving Namche, the trail ascends gradually through alpine forests and along mountain ridges. You’ll pass through Tengboche, home to the largest monastery in the Khumbu region. Take some time to admire the Tengboche Monastery with the spectacular backdrop of Ama Dablam before continuing your trek to the quiet mountain village of Pangboche, where you’ll spend the night.
Today's route takes you deeper into the Imja Valley, surrounded by stunning snow-capped peaks. You’ll pass through Dingboche before ascending further to Chhukung, a small settlement nestled beneath Island Peak, Lhotse, and Nuptse. This is one of the last villages before Base Camp, and it offers dramatic views and a peaceful atmosphere to rest.
This is another vital acclimatization day, with a challenging but rewarding hike to Chhukung Ri, a rocky peak offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains including Makalu, Baruntse, and the Imja Glacier. Reaching over 5,500 meters, this hike prepares your body for the summit attempt. After descending, spend the rest of the day resting and hydrating in Chhukung.
The trail to Base Camp leads across rocky terrain, glacial moraines, and scenic alpine valleys. As you approach Island Peak Base Camp, you’ll feel the air thinning and the excitement building. Once there, you’ll settle into your tented campsite, have a final gear check, and receive a climbing briefing from your guides. Rest early in preparation for your summit push the next day.
This is the most demanding and most rewarding day of your journey. You’ll begin your summit attempt early in the morning, often around 1–2 AM. The climb involves crossing glaciers, ascending fixed rope sections, and navigating a steep ice wall near the summit ridge. From the top of Island Peak, you’ll enjoy unparalleled views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and other towering giants. After spending a brief time at the summit, descend carefully back to Base Camp and onward to Chhukung for a well-earned rest.
You’ll begin your descent to Dingboche, enjoying the return trek with new perspectives. From Dingboche, you’ll board a scenic helicopter ride to Lukla, saving time and energy. After a short break in Lukla, take your return flight to Kathmandu, where your unforgettable Island Peak climbing adventure officially concludes.

Today we follow the trail and stop for lunch at Gorakshep. After lunch we continue until we reach Everest Base Camp (5364) where you have a spectacular view of Nuptse. The path eventually narrows before entering a steep rock vale (narrow channel of rock). We finally, after many steps across and through the vale emerge on the other side Your guide, for safety reasons, may fix a rope to each climber to assist in climbing the final snowy slope to the ridge at the summit. Island Peak Climbing is an exciting adventure that takes climbers to the summit of Island Peak, also known as Imja Tse. The peak is located in the Khumbu region of Nepal and stands at an elevation of 6,189 meters (20,305 feet). The adventure begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, followed by a trek to Namche Bazaar, the gateway to the Khumbu region. The trail then leads to the village of Dingboche, where climbers spend time acclimatizing to the high altitude. The acclimatization process is crucial to prevent altitude sickness, which can be dangerous and even life-threatening.
After acclimatizing, climbers head towards Island Peak base camp, where they set up their tents and prepare for the climb. The climbing route to Island Peak includes steep ascents, technical sections, and a glacier crossing. The final ascent to the summit requires the use of crampons, ice axes, and ropes.
The Island Peak Climbing adventure is led by experienced guides who are trained in first aid and rescue techniques. The safety of the climbers is of utmost importance, and the guides ensure that the climbers are well-prepared and equipped for the climb.
During the adventure, climbers stay in teahouses or tents along the trekking route and in tents at the base camp. The food is basic but nutritious, and includes local dishes such as dal bhat and momos. The climbers need to bring their own climbing gear and equipment, including crampons, ice axes, ropes, helmets, and harnesses. The gear can be rented in Kathmandu or on the trail.
The summit day is the highlight of the adventure, and requires an early start to reach the summit before noon. The climbers need to be physically and mentally prepared for the long and strenuous climb to the top. The summit offers stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks, including Lhotse, Makalu, and Ama Dablam.
The Island Peak Climbing adventure also offers a unique cultural experience, as climbers get to explore the local Sherpa villages and monasteries along the way. The Sherpa people are renowned for their mountaineering skills and their warm hospitality.

Itinerary
Upon arrival at Kathmandu airport, you will be greeted by a representative of the trekking company and transferred to your hotel. You can spend the day resting and exploring the city.
You will take an early morning flight to Lukla and start trekking to Phakding. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi river and passes through small villages and lush forests. Distance: 8km, Duration: 3-4 hours.
Today, you will trek to Namche Bazaar, a bustling town in the Khumbu region. You will cross several suspension bridges and climb steep trails to reach Namche Bazaar. Distance: 12km, Duration: 6-7 hours.
Today is a rest day to acclimatize to the altitude. You can explore the town, visit the Sherpa museum, or hike to the nearby Everest View Hotel for stunning views of Mount Everest and other Himalayan peaks.
Today we head off to Tengboche and along the trail have our first views of several enormous peaks: Ama Dablam (6812m), Lhotse Shar (8393m), Taboche (6495m), Khangtega (6782m), and Thamserku (6623m). As we continue we come to an Army barrack at Phunke Tenga (22335m) and arrive at Tengboche where we stop for lunch. After lunch we visit the famous Tibetan Tengboche Buddhist monastery and later continue on the trail and pass the Sagarmatha National park office at Debouche. Continuing we finally reach Pangboche and visit the Gompa (temple). Tonight we stay here.
Today we head off up stone steps until we reach Pheriche and later Thukla where we stay the night.
Today we follow the trail and stop for lunch at Gorakshep. After lunch we continue until we reach Everest Base Camp (5364) where you have a spectacular view of Nuptse. After stopping for lunch we trek toward EBC following a trail alongside the Khumbu ice sheet. The trek around the ice sheet takes around 1.5 hours before crossing the glacier and into the region of EBC (5360m). At base camp you will have an opportunity to meet other climbers and share stories. From EBC you will have views of the Khumbu ice sheet and glacier with its frightening and dangerous crevices. We will then descend to Gorakshep where we stay the night.
At around 4 a.m. in the pre-dawn darkness and cold temperatures (-10 to -14 C) we begin our trek. It is common for there to be cold winds at this altitude. Towering peaks, such as Khumbutse, Lingtren, and Changtse loom before us to the east as Everest comes into view. Not until we reach Kala Patthar (5550m) do we get a 360 degree up-close and bird’s eye view of Mount Everest. After taking in the panoramic views and madly clicking cameras we will return back to Lobuchefor a good night's rest. Breakfast, lunch & dinner included.
Meals - breakfast, lunch & dinner.
We will then descent to Island Peak Base Camp, and with your guides, will celebrate our success. Meals - breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Today is the summit day, and you will start early in the morning to reach the summit of Island Peak. The climb takes around 10-12 hours and involves steep ascents over rocky terrain, which requires the use of ropes and crampons. After the successful summit climb, you will trek back to Dingboche, a small village located at an altitude of 4400 meters.
You will trek back to Namche Bazaar, passing through Dingboche and Tengboche. The trail offers great views of the Himalayas and passes through beautiful villages. Duration: 7-8 hours.
The rocky path down is steep and it is advised to be cautious crossing this rocky landscape.
