ITINERARY

Expand All

Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Soti Khola, a small village located at the start of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The drive takes approximately 7 to 8 hours, winding through picturesque landscapes and bustling towns. As you leave Kathmandu, you’ll pass through the picturesque countryside, terraced fields, and the banks of the Trishuli River. The road eventually leads to Soti Khola, where you’ll spend the night in a local guesthouse, acclimatizing to the trek's start.

After breakfast, your trek begins with a 5 to 6-hour walk from Soti Khola to Machha Khola. The trail follows the Budhi Gandaki River, crossing suspension bridges and passing through lush forests and small villages. You’ll navigate a variety of terrain, including rocky paths and gentle inclines. Machha Khola, named for its fish-rich river, is a charming village where you’ll stay overnight, enjoying the serene environment and local hospitality.

Today's trek takes you from Machha Khola to Jagat, a journey of 5 to 6 hours. The trail continues along the Budhi Gandaki River, climbing through terraced fields and dense forests. You'll cross several small streams and suspension bridges, with occasional views of the surrounding hills and mountains. Jagat is a small village known for its traditional stone houses and scenic surroundings, where you’ll rest and prepare for the next leg of your trek.

From Jagat, you’ll trek to Deng in 6 to 7 hours. The trail gradually ascends through the lush forests of the Manaslu Conservation Area, passing through several small villages and terraced fields. As you climb higher, the scenery becomes more dramatic, with views of the towering peaks in the distance. Deng is a village with a mix of Gurung and Tibetan influences, offering a comfortable place to stay overnight.

Today’s trek takes you from Deng to Namrung, a 6 to 7-hour journey. The trail ascends through dense forests and alpine meadows, providing occasional glimpses of the majestic Manaslu and other peaks. As you approach Namrung, the landscape opens up, revealing expansive views of the surrounding mountains. Namrung is a larger village with a variety of teahouses and a vibrant local culture, perfect for relaxing and acclimating to the increasing altitude.

The trek from Namrung to Sama Gaun is a 5 to 6-hour journey. The trail continues through beautiful landscapes, with stunning views of the Manaslu range. You’ll pass through several small settlements and enjoy the increasing Tibetan influence in the local culture. Sama Gaun is a significant stop at a high altitude, offering spectacular views and a chance to explore the local culture and monasteries.

This day is dedicated to acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to the higher altitude of Sama Gaun. You can take short hikes around the village, such as visiting the nearby Birendra Lake or exploring the local monasteries. Acclimatization is crucial to minimize the risk of altitude sickness and to prepare for the higher altitudes you’ll encounter in the coming days.

From Sama Gaun, trek to Samdo in 3 to 4 hours. The trail ascends gradually, offering fantastic views of the surrounding peaks and the Tibetan border. Samdo is a small, traditional Tibetan village known for its hospitality and stunning mountain vistas. The shorter trek today allows for better acclimatization and preparation for the challenging days ahead.

Today's trek takes you from Samdo to Dharmasala, also known as Larkya Phedi, in 4 to 5 hours. The trail continues to climb, with increasingly spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. Dharmasala is a small, high-altitude settlement that serves as a base camp for crossing the Larkya La Pass. The higher altitude means colder temperatures, so be prepared for a more rugged environment.

The highlight of the trek is today’s challenging journey from Dharmasala to Bimtang via the Larkya La Pass. The trek takes 7 to 9 hours, starting with a steep ascent to the pass at 5,106 meters (16,752 feet). From the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayas. The descent to Bimtang is long and can be physically demanding, but the stunning scenery makes it worthwhile. Bimtang offers a welcome rest after the demanding day.

The trek from Bimtang to Dharapani takes 5 to 6 hours, descending from the high altitudes of Bimtang through lush forests and terraced fields. As you descend, the scenery changes from the high-altitude landscapes to more temperate regions. Dharapani is a larger village along the Annapurna Circuit, providing a comfortable place to rest and reflect on the journey.

On the final day, you’ll drive from Dharapani to Kathmandu via Besisahar, a journey of 7 to 8 hours. The drive retraces the route you took at the beginning of the trek, offering a chance to view the changing landscapes as you return to the bustling city. Arriving in Kathmandu, you’ll have the opportunity to relax and celebrate the completion of your trek.

GOOD TO KNOW

1. A Unique Himalayan Adventure

The Manaslu Circuit Trek offers a unique trekking experience in Nepal's Himalayas, providing an opportunity to explore a less-traveled route compared to the Annapurna and Everest Base Camp treks. This remote journey encircles Mount Manaslu, the eighth-highest mountain in the world, allowing trekkers to experience stunning landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and rich cultural interactions far from the more crowded trails.

2. Permit Requirements

To trek the Manaslu Circuit, you need two key permits: the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) and the Restricted Area Permit (RAP). The MCAP is required for entry into the Manaslu Conservation Area, while the RAP is necessary due to the restricted status of the region. These permits are typically arranged through a trekking agency or in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Ensuring you have these permits in advance is crucial for a smooth trekking experience.

3. High-Altitude Challenges

The Manaslu Circuit Trek involves crossing the Larkya La Pass at an altitude of 5,160 meters (16,930 feet). This high-altitude pass requires proper acclimatization and preparation to avoid altitude sickness. Trekking at high altitudes can be challenging, so it’s essential to ascend gradually, stay hydrated, and listen to your body. Adequate acclimatization days are included in the trek itinerary to help prevent altitude-related issues.

4. Scenic Diversity

One of the highlights of the Manaslu Circuit Trek is its incredible scenic diversity. Trekkers traverse a range of landscapes, from lush subtropical forests and terraced fields to alpine meadows and arid high-altitude deserts. This varied terrain offers breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, glacial rivers, and serene mountain lakes, making every day of trekking a new visual adventure.

5. Cultural Immersion

The Manaslu Circuit is not only a trek through natural beauty but also an opportunity for cultural immersion. The route passes through several traditional Tibetan-influenced villages where trekkers can experience the local culture, customs, and way of life. Interaction with the Gurung and Tibetan communities along the trek provides insights into their unique traditions, festivals, and religious practices.

6. Accommodation Options

Accommodation on the Manaslu Circuit varies from basic teahouses to more comfortable lodges. Teahouses offer essential amenities such as beds, meals, and sometimes hot showers. While the facilities can be rudimentary, they provide a warm and hospitable environment for trekkers. It’s advisable to be prepared for simple living conditions and to embrace the local hospitality.

7. Food and Dining

The food along the Manaslu Circuit Trek includes a mix of Nepali and international dishes. Common meals are dal bhat (rice and lentil soup), momos (dumplings), noodles, and pasta. Most teahouses offer a variety of options, though it’s best to stick to cooked foods to avoid digestive issues. Special dietary needs can often be accommodated with prior notice.

8. Weather and Climate

The best times to trek the Manaslu Circuit are during the pre-monsoon (March to May) and post-monsoon (September to November) seasons. These periods offer the most stable weather conditions with clear skies and moderate temperatures. The monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rains, and winter (December to February) can be extremely cold with snow, affecting trekking conditions at higher altitudes.

9. Safety and Health

Safety is paramount on the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Trekkers should have comprehensive travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuations. Basic medical facilities are available in larger villages, but for serious health issues, evacuation by helicopter may be necessary. Carrying a basic first aid kit and being aware of emergency procedures is also recommended.

10. Flexibility and Personalization

While guided treks offer structured support, there is flexibility in how you experience the Manaslu Circuit. You can choose and pay for accommodations directly at teahouses and lodges based on your preferences and budget. FAQS

Expand All

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a remote and less-traveled trekking route in Nepal that circumnavigates Mount Manaslu (8,163 meters / 26,781 feet), the eighth-highest mountain in the world. This trek offers a blend of breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and rich cultural experiences. It traverses through lush forests, picturesque villages, high-altitude deserts, and crosses the Larkya La Pass at 5,160 meters (16,930 feet), providing trekkers with an adventure off the beaten path.

The best times to trek the Manaslu Circuit are during the pre-monsoon (March to May) and post-monsoon (September to November) seasons. During these periods, the weather is generally clear with stable temperatures, making trekking conditions optimal. The monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rain and increased risk of landslides, while winter (December to February) can be very cold, with snow covering the trail and making it more challenging.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered moderately to highly challenging due to its remote location, varying terrain, and the need to cross the high-altitude Larkya La Pass. Trekkers should have good physical fitness and prior trekking experience. Acclimatization is crucial due to the high altitudes, so a gradual ascent and proper preparation are essential to ensure a safe and successful trek.

To trek the Manaslu Circuit, you will need two key permits:

  • Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP): Required for entry into the Manaslu Conservation Area.
  • Restricted Area Permit (RAP): Necessary for trekking in the restricted region around Manaslu. These permits can be obtained through trekking agencies or in Kathmandu and Pokhara. It is important to have these permits arranged in advance as they are essential for trekking in this region.

Essential items for the Manaslu Circuit Trek include:

  • Clothing: Layered clothing suitable for varying temperatures, including base layers, a warm fleece or down jacket, and a waterproof outer layer. Don’t forget a hat, gloves, and sun protection.
  • Footwear: Sturdy trekking boots with good ankle support.
  • Gear: Trekking poles, a high-quality sleeping bag (for cold temperatures), and a headlamp with extra batteries.
  • Extras: Sunscreen, sunglasses, a water purification system, and a basic first aid kit.

Accommodation along the Manaslu Circuit mainly consists of teahouses and lodges. The quality varies from basic to more comfortable options. Teahouses provide essential amenities such as a bed, meals, and sometimes hot showers. While the accommodations are generally comfortable, they can be basic compared to more popular trekking routes, so be prepared for a rustic experience.

Food options on the Manaslu Circuit include a mix of Nepali and international dishes. Common meals include dal bhat (rice and lentil soup), momos (dumplings), noodles, and pasta. Most teahouses offer a variety of options, but sticking to cooked foods is recommended to avoid digestive issues. Snacks and some international foods are available in larger villages.

To minimize the risk of altitude sickness, follow these guidelines:

  • Ascend Gradually: Increase your altitude slowly to give your body time to adjust.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol.
  • Take Rest Days: Allow yourself to acclimatize by taking rest days at higher altitudes.
  • Listen to Your Body: Be aware of symptoms like headaches, nausea, and dizziness. If symptoms persist or worsen, descend to a lower altitude and seek medical help.

Medical facilities along the Manaslu Circuit are limited to basic care in larger villages such as Samagaon and Dharapani. For more serious medical issues, evacuation by helicopter may be necessary. Ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuations. Carry a basic first aid kit and know the emergency procedures.

While it is possible to trek the Manaslu Circuit independently, many trekkers opt for a guide and/or porter for several reasons:

  • Safety: Guides are experienced in navigating the trails and handling emergencies.
  • Local Insight: Guides can provide valuable knowledge about the region’s culture and environment.
  • Logistics: Porters can carry your gear, making the trek more enjoyable and less physically demanding.

If trekking independently, ensure you are well-prepared, have a detailed map, and understand the trail conditions.
