About Us

Sherpa Expedition and Trekking Pvt. Ltd.

Pioneers of the Himalayas Since 1977

Sherpa Expedition and Trekking Pvt. Ltd. is not simply a travel company. We are a living tradition — born from the mountains, shaped by decades of experience, and driven by an unshakeable love for Nepal and the extraordinary world it contains.

Founded on January 7, 1977, we hold the proud distinction of being among the very first trekking companies to receive official authorization from the Nepal Tourism Board — a recognition that reflects not just our longevity, but the standard of integrity and excellence we have maintained from day one. Nearly five decades later, that standard remains the measure of everything we do.

We specialize in trekking, mountaineering, cultural tours, and adventure expeditions across Nepal and the broader Himalayan region. But what truly defines us is something harder to put into a brochure — a genuine, deeply held passion for connecting people with one of the most awe-inspiring places on earth, and doing so in a way that honors the land, the culture, and the communities that make Nepal the remarkable destination it is.

Over the years, we have guided thousands of travelers — solo adventurers, families, seasoned mountaineers, first-time trekkers — through landscapes that stretch the imagination and experiences that reshape the way people see the world. More than 80% of our guests return to travel with us again. Many have become lifelong friends. That kind of loyalty cannot be manufactured. It is the natural result of trust built one honest journey at a time.

At Sherpa Expedition and Trekking, we believe the best adventures are the ones that leave you changed. Our job is to make sure that change is profound, positive, and something you carry with you long after the trail ends.

Our Story — From Humble Trails to Himalayan Legacy

Every great institution has an origin rooted in something real. Ours began not with a business plan, but with a pair of boots and an irresistible pull toward the mountains.

When Sherpa Expedition and Trekking was established in January 1977, Nepal's tourism industry was still in its infancy. The trails that would one day become world-famous were known only to locals, high-altitude researchers, and a handful of adventurous pioneers. Our founders were among those pioneers — working as mountain guides, walking routes that few outsiders had ever attempted, and slowly building an intimate understanding of Nepal that went far deeper than geography.

What they discovered along the way changed everything. Nepal, they realized, was not simply a destination for those chasing altitude records or dramatic summit photographs. It was a civilization — ancient, layered, and alive. It was sacred temples rising from medieval courtyards in Kathmandu. It was yak herders navigating high passes with the calm certainty of people who have never needed a map. It was monasteries perched on cliffsides where monks had chanted the same prayers for five hundred years. It was a country where the spiritual, the natural, and the human were woven together so tightly that you could not separate them even if you tried.

This was the Nepal our founders wanted to share with the world.

In those early years, growth was slow and deliberate. We built our reputation the old-fashioned way — by doing excellent work, treating every guest with genuine care, and earning the word-of-mouth recommendations that no advertising budget can replicate. We trained guides who were not just technically skilled but deeply knowledgeable about the cultures, ecosystems, and histories of the regions they led. We developed relationships with local communities that have endured for generations. We refined our operations year by year, always asking how we could do better.

By the time Nepal's tourism industry began to boom in the 1980s and 1990s, Sherpa Expedition and Trekking was already established as one of its most trusted names. We did not chase trends. We did not compromise our values for short-term growth. We grew the way the mountains grow — slowly, solidly, and with deep roots.

Today, we stand as one of Nepal's leading adventure travel companies — a business built on nearly five decades of authentic experience, genuine relationships, and an enduring love for the Himalayan world.

Our Mission

To create transformative travel experiences that connect people deeply with Nepal's natural wonders, living cultures, and remarkable communities — while protecting and enriching everything we touch.

At Sherpa Expedition and Trekking, we do not measure success by the number of trips we run or the summits we reach. We measure it by the depth of impact we create — for our guests, for the communities we work with, and for the landscapes we are privileged to explore.

Our mission operates on three levels, and each one matters equally.

For Our Guests — We are committed to delivering experiences that go far beyond what any standard tour operator can offer. We want every person who travels with us to come away not just having seen Nepal, but having understood it. Having felt it. Having been genuinely changed by it. That means designing itineraries with intelligence and care, choosing routes that reveal rather than simply tick off, and creating space for the kind of spontaneous, unscripted moments that become the most treasured memories of any journey. It means having guides who are storytellers as much as navigators, and who can translate the landscape — its history, its ecology, its spiritual significance — in ways that make the experience come alive. And it means maintaining the highest possible standards of safety, comfort, and service so that our guests can focus entirely on the experience, without distraction or worry.

For Our Communities — The people of Nepal's mountain regions are not a backdrop to our business. They are partners in everything we do. Our mission includes a deep, ongoing commitment to the communities whose homelands we travel through — ensuring that tourism creates lasting, meaningful benefit for local families and does not merely extract value from the places it visits. This means employing local guides, porters, cooks, and support staff at fair wages. It means directing our guests toward locally owned lodges and suppliers. It means investing in community development initiatives, from educational programs to infrastructure support, that create positive change where it is most needed.

For the Environment — The mountains, forests, rivers, and ecosystems of Nepal are the very foundation of what we offer. Without them, there is no business, no experience, no wonder. Our mission demands that we operate as responsible stewards of these environments — minimizing our footprint, enforcing strict waste management practices on every expedition, and actively contributing to conservation efforts that protect these landscapes for the generations who will come after us.

This three-part mission is not a statement we hang on a wall. It is a daily practice, reflected in every decision we make.

Our Vision

To be the most trusted, most responsible, and most transformative Himalayan adventure company in the world — opening Nepal's extraordinary heritage to global travelers while ensuring that every journey we create makes Nepal stronger, healthier, and more vibrant than before.

We envision a future in which adventure travel and genuine sustainability are not in tension but in harmony — where the act of exploring Nepal contributes meaningfully to its preservation, where tourism becomes one of the most powerful forces for cultural protection and economic empowerment in the mountain world.

We envision travelers who arrive as strangers and leave as advocates — people who have experienced Nepal so deeply that they become champions of its wellbeing long after they return home. People who donate to schools they visited, who recommend Nepali artisans to their friends, who follow the news from communities they once shared a meal with.

We envision a Himalayan landscape that remains as breathtaking fifty years from now as it was when our founders first walked its trails — protected not by isolation, but by the conscious, caring presence of travelers who have learned to love it the way we do.

And we envision Sherpa Expedition and Trekking at the center of that future — continuing to lead, continuing to innovate, and continuing to prove that the best travel experiences are the ones built on honesty, respect, and a genuine commitment to doing things right.

Our Core Values

Integrity — We say what we mean and do what we say. In an industry where overpromising is common, we have built our reputation on honest communication, transparent pricing, and a refusal to cut corners when it comes to safety or quality. Our guests trust us, and we take that trust seriously.

Passion — Everything we do is driven by a genuine love for Nepal, for adventure, and for the life-changing potential of meaningful travel. This passion is not performative — it shows up in the detail of our itineraries, the enthusiasm of our guides, and the pride we take in every expedition we run.

Responsibility — We hold ourselves accountable to a standard that goes beyond legal compliance or industry norms. Responsible behavior means protecting the environment, supporting our communities, treating our staff with dignity and fairness, and constantly asking ourselves whether our actions are making the places we operate in better or worse.

Excellence — We pursue excellence in everything, from the accuracy of our route planning to the quality of the meals our kitchen teams prepare at high altitude. Excellence does not mean extravagance. It means doing every job thoroughly, thoughtfully, and with genuine pride in the craft.

Respect — For the mountains. For the cultures. For our guests. For our staff. For the communities we visit. Respect is the foundation of every relationship we build and every experience we create.

Discovery — We believe that the spirit of discovery — of curiosity, of openness, of willingness to be surprised — is what separates a great journey from a merely comfortable one. We cultivate that spirit in everything we do, always looking for the hidden path, the unexpected encounter, the moment that changes the way someone sees the world.

What We Offer

Sherpa Expedition and Trekking operates across the full spectrum of Himalayan adventure travel, offering a portfolio of experiences as diverse as the landscape itself.

Our trekking programs range from gentle cultural walks through the hill country surrounding Kathmandu to demanding multi-week expeditions through some of the most remote and spectacular terrain on earth. Whether you are seeking the iconic grandeur of the Everest Base Camp trail, the quieter beauty of the Langtang Valley, the dramatic landscapes of the Annapurna Circuit, or routes so rarely traveled that you may walk for days without encountering another foreign visitor, we have the expertise and the experience to take you there safely and memorably.

Our mountaineering expeditions draw climbers from across the world who are drawn by Nepal's legendary peaks — from the celebrated giants of the eight-thousander list to the technically demanding but less crowded summits that reward those willing to venture beyond the famous names. Our high-altitude teams are among the most experienced and well-equipped in the country, with a safety record that reflects the care and professionalism we bring to every climb.

Beyond trekking and mountaineering, we offer immersive cultural tours that explore Nepal's extraordinary heritage — its medieval cities, its living goddess traditions, its Buddhist monasteries and Hindu temples, its festivals and markets and ancient trade routes. These journeys are designed for travelers who want to understand Nepal as a civilization, not just as a landscape.

We also offer customized private expeditions for groups and individuals seeking a tailored experience — designed from scratch around your interests, your fitness level, your schedule, and the kind of journey you want to have. Our team of experienced planners will work with you to build an itinerary that is uniquely yours.

Our Commitment to Sustainable and Responsible Tourism

Responsible tourism is not a trend we have adopted — it is a practice we have maintained since long before it became an industry conversation.

From our earliest years, we recognized that the environments and communities we depend on are not renewable resources to be consumed but living systems to be nurtured. That recognition has shaped our operations at every level.

On every expedition we run, waste management is taken seriously and enforced consistently. Biodegradable waste is handled responsibly at designated facilities. Non-biodegradable materials are carried out of wilderness areas and disposed of properly. We brief every guest on responsible trail behavior and equip our teams with the tools and training to maintain environmental standards even in the most remote conditions.

We actively support locally owned lodges, restaurants, and supply businesses, ensuring that the economic benefits of tourism are distributed as widely as possible within the communities that host our expeditions. We pay our guides, porters, and support staff fair wages — above industry minimums — and provide them with appropriate equipment, insurance, and working conditions.

Our community investment programs have included contributions to school construction in remote mountain villages, ongoing support for the families of porters — including widows, children, and individuals living with disabilities — and targeted assistance for communities affected by natural disasters and economic hardship.

When the earthquakes of April and May 2015 devastated large parts of Nepal, Sherpa Expedition and Trekking responded immediately. We launched a dedicated community recovery initiative, mobilizing our networks and resources to support affected families, assist in mountain cleanup efforts, and help rebuild some of the infrastructure that had been destroyed. That response was not a publicity exercise. It was simply what we believed was right — and what our relationships with these communities demanded of us.

We are proud of what we have contributed over the decades. We are also honest about how much more there is to do. Sustainable tourism is not a destination you arrive at — it is a direction you keep traveling in. We are committed to continuing that journey for as long as we operate.

Our Team — The Heart of Everything

No company is stronger than the people who make it run. At Sherpa Expedition and Trekking, we are fortunate to have built a team that is not just professionally exceptional but genuinely extraordinary as human beings.

Our guides are the living embodiment of everything Sherpa Expedition and Trekking stands for. They are mountain experts who know these trails with the kind of intimacy that only comes from a lifetime of walking them. They are cultural interpreters who can explain the significance of a painted rock or a festival ceremony in ways that open windows into a world most visitors would otherwise only glimpse from the outside. They are calm, experienced decision-makers who know how to manage the unexpected challenges that mountain environments sometimes present — and who prioritize guest safety above every other consideration.

Behind our guides is a team of logistics specialists, trek planners, and operations coordinators who work tirelessly to ensure that every expedition runs smoothly from the moment a guest arrives in Kathmandu to the moment they depart. Their work is largely invisible — and that invisibility is itself a mark of how well they do it.

Our kitchen and support teams — often overlooked in conversations about trekking companies — are the people who make the physical experience of a long expedition sustainable and even pleasurable. Preparing nutritious, delicious meals at altitude, in remote locations, with limited resources, is a genuine craft. Our teams have mastered it.

Together, these people are what make Sherpa Expedition and Trekking something more than a business. They are what make us a family — and they are why our guests so often describe their experience with us not just as a great trip, but as one of the defining experiences of their lives.

A Message to Every Traveler

The Himalayas have been calling people for thousands of years. They called our founders in 1977. They call us still, every single day.

There is something about these mountains that is difficult to put into words — a scale, a silence, a spiritual weight that makes ordinary concerns feel very small and the important things in life feel very clear. People who come here often describe it as a kind of homecoming, even if they have never been before. As if the mountains recognize something in them, and they recognize something in the mountains.

At Sherpa Expedition and Trekking, our purpose is to create the conditions for that recognition. To plan carefully enough that nothing practical gets in the way of the profound. To guide wisely enough that you feel supported without feeling managed. To connect you with the people, the places, and the moments that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Nepal is waiting. The mountains are patient — they have been here far longer than any of us, and they will be here long after we are gone. But your chance to walk among them, to breathe their air and feel their scale and carry their memory home inside you, belongs to now.

We are here. We are ready. And we would be honored to take you there.
