ANNAPURNA ROUND TREK

This is an ideal trek for those who want to avoid the crowds and love nature. This is a great trek in the Annapurna Conservation Area that takes you to the highest pass and the deepest valley in the world. Thorong La Pass (5,416m/17,769ft) and the Kali Gandaki Gorge (5,571m) are just two of the amazing features of this incredible journey. You will go on trails through stunning rhododendron, oak, bamboo and Cyprus forests and be in awe at the proximity of these massive snow-covered peaks:  Annapurna I, II, III, IV, Dhaulagiri (8167m) (meaning white beautiful mountain in Sanskrit), Machapuchare (Fish Tail), Annapurna South and Manaslu. You will also visit one of the highest lakes in the world, Tilicho Lake (4919m), and discover the distinct cultures of the many villagers living in this distant region in the Annapurna Ranges. Another feature of this trek is visiting the famous Buddhist and Hindu sacred site at Muktinath where many sects and religions live in peace. It is said that there are over a 100 varieties of orchids in the region, as well as many native animals like the Martin deer, Langur monkey and the mysterious Snow Leopard.

This is an excellent opportunity to experience the Sherpa lifestyles and their friendly welcoming smiles, and who are also famous for their stamina as high altitude climbers. Their status as mountaineers is recognized worldwide.

After a bus and jeep ride from Kathmandu your trek begins at Syange and through the following villages: Dharapani (1,960m/6,430ft), Chame (2,710m/8,891ft), Pisang (3,300m/10824ft), Manang (3,500m/11,482ft), Yak Kharka (4,110m/13,484ft), Thorong Phedi (4420m/14501ft), Thorong La Pass (5416m/17764ft), Muktinath (3,800/12,467ft) then a drive to Jomsom (2,700m) and to Pokhara (8,50m). The last stage of this journey is a drive from Pokhara back to Kathmandu (1,350m). You will notice that from the very start of the trek we gradually head to higher altitudes, thus helping you to properly acclimatize. We will also spend a day at Manang to better acclimatize and prepare ourselves before climbing to Thorong La Pass, the highest point on the trek.

You will trek through several climate zones, from the subtropical forests, through terraced farmland and to high alpine glaciers. There is also Tatopani (meaning hot water in Nepali) where you can take a dip in the therapeutic thermal hot springs.

Sherpa Teams have more than 40 years (Est. 1977) experience in satisfying the needs of its clients. We take care of every detail of the trek which allows you to focus exclusively on your trek. Find out more why this is the most popular trekking region of all Nepal.

ITINERARY

Expand All

Sherpa Teams staff will be there to meet you at Tribhuvan International Airport and take you to your hotel in Thamel that will be followed by a briefing covering all aspects of the trek. You will have time today to explore the tourist hub of Thamel until the evening.

We will spend the day sightseeing in the Kathmandu Valley with our guide. We will visit: Pashupatinath, which is the most sacred Hindu temple in Nepal and a place where many pilgrims from all over Nepal go to worship Lord Shiva (situated on the banks of the holy Bagmati River), Bouddhanath, a Buddhist temple known as ‘Little Tibet’ and then to Swayambhunath known as the Monkey Temple. From Swayambhunath we head to Kathmandu’s celebrated Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage listed site situated in front of the old royal palace.

This morning we will take a public bus from Kathmandu to Besisahar, about a 6 hour ride, from where we  will take a local shared 4WD for another two hours before arriving at Syange Village where we will stay overnight. You will have some great views from Syange Village of Mt. Annapurna II, Manaslu and Mt. Lamjung.

Just before arriving at Manang we cross a bridge and then follow the trail through terraced farmlands, by waterfalls and on to Koto Village before arriving at Dharapani that is one of the largest villages in the Manang Valley. We will stay here overnight in a guesthouse.

Today is a much more physically demanding day on the trail as we ascend along some treed ridges on our way to Chame. Instead of looking down, we need to look up to where we will see some enormous snowy peaks: Lamjung Himal, Annapurna II, and Annapurna IV (7,525m). There is also a therapeutic natural hot spring on the trail where we can stop and relax our tired muscles. Tonight we will stay at a guesthouse at Chame.

This morning we follow the trail through a steep narrow valley from where we have our first view of Paungda Danda, an mammoth curved rock face soaring 1500m up from the river bed. From here we can see Annapurna II and Pisang Peak. We will then head down through a beautiful terrain to the Manang Valley. Tonight we will stay at a guesthouse in Pisang.

Today we head higher to Ghyaru Village. On the trail we will have some charming views of Annapurna II and other snow covered peaks, as well as views of the glacier of Annapurna IV – that is plainly visible from Ghyaru. We will stop for lunch at Ghyaru and then head to Ngawal. You will know you are nearing Ngawal Village once you reach the Mani wall and the Tibetan prayer flags fluttering in the wind. At Ngawal we can look down to Humde Village. We then descend to the villages of Bhakra and Braga before arriving at Manang where we will stay in a guesthouse overnight.

It is vigorously recommended by health experts to remain active when spending time acclimatizing. We will take a short trek to Bhojo Gumba – a monastery, or alternatively to Gangapurna Lake. If we have the energy, we can even trek to Vraga Village where and visit the Himalayan Rescue Association who can inform us about the condition of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Tonight we will stay at a guesthouse in Manang.

Leaving Manang we cross the river before arriving at Tenki Village and then head up the Marsyangdi Valley through several small villages, such as Ghunsa and pass through some scrubby landscape while heading to higher altitudes. We will see yak and mountain horses grazing on the alpine pastures before we come to Yak Kharka where we will stay overnight at a guesthouse.

After we pass the last settlement, Lear, the trail ascends and we have some grand views of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Cloche, and a close up view of Chuli Peak. The terrain gets more craggy and devoid of vegetation as we head to higher altitudes. We then pass Thorong Phedi after a lunch break and follow a zigzag trail that takes us to Upper Phedi or High Camp where there are several teahouses and a lodge. We will stay here overnight.

We get up very early today (at around 3 a.m.) in order to reach the top of the pass on time and before the cold wind starts and to catch the best of the glorious views of the northern Annapurna, Damodar, Bhrikuti and Dhaulagiri ranges. Today is one of the highlights of this trek as we cross one of the highest passes in the world, Thorong La Pass. We cross from east to west, from Manang to Muktinath, which is a safer and easier route than crossing from the other direction. Once at the pass the effort will be well worth it as you will have some really stunning views over the nearby mountains. After a photo session, we will then descend to the valley floor and head down to Muktinath for the night.

Today the trail descends 1,200 meters to the Kaligandaki River valley, with a short break at the small settlement of Ekle Bhatti - meaning a lonely teahouse. The valley gets very windy in the afternoons as we head to Jomsom and then on to Marpha, a charming village with whitewashed houses, paved streets, and many well-maintained lodges. From here you will have time to try the local apple products like cider, brandy, and juice that this area from Kagbeni to Larjung is famous for. We will stay overnight at Marpha.

This morning we follow the trail along the banks of the Kaligandaki River heading downstream until we arrive at Tukuche Village located beneath the peaks of Tukuche, Dhaulagiri and beneath Nilgiri’s glacier that heads down from Dhaulagiri east face. Next we arrive at Larjung Village and cross the river before heading up to the tree-line again where the trail takes us through pine, oak and rhododendron forests. The trail then heads back to the river close to Kalopani Village. We cross a suspension bridge over the thunderous Kali Gandaki River near Kalopani. From Kalopani we have superb views of Mt.Annapurna I, Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri soaring high above the surrounding forests. We then have a short downhill trek to Lete Village where we will stay overnight.

This morning we descend from the more barren and harsh alpine regions through pine and other conifer forests as we head down the valley between the immense Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges. The trail heads through Ghasa Village with spectacular views of the snowy peaks and into a cooler climate. Not far from Ghasa is the southernmost tip of the region inhabited by the Thakali people. The trail continues downhill into the sub-tropical regions before reaching Tatopani (meaning hot water in Nepali). On this leg of the trail, we can see the cascading Rupsi waterfalls. The hot springs at Tatopani are situated on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River – a great place to sit and relax in the hot springs. We will stay here overnight.

This morning we climb 1670 metres, quite tough going, and pass through more cultivated farmland with their terraced fields. We ascend up through magnolia and rhododendron forests (most spectacular in spring time) and on the trail have some beautiful panoramic view of the mountains. Tonight we stay at Ghorepani that also claims to have some very exceptional views of the Annapurna Ranges and Machapuchare (fish tail) -  one of the few unclimbed peaks in Nepal due to its religious status as home to Lord Shiva.

Today we are up before sunrise so as to reach Poon Hill to catch the sun rising up over the mountains. It is about a hour trek to reach Poon Hill (3,210m) where the views are truly spectacular. The mountains are beaming in the perfect light of the morning, reflecting various changing colors off the snow-white peaks. After frantically snapping photos we will head back down to Ghorepani (2960m) for breakfast. From Ghorepani we ascend along mountain ridges and through rhododendron and pine forests before coming to Deurali (2,960m). We then continue to descend and come to a cross-road at Banthanti and then head to Tikhedhunga where we will stay the night.

Leaving Tikhedhunga we descend through farming villages and pass several waterfalls before reaching the charismatic village of Birethanti located right next to the Modi River where we will stop for lunch. After lunch we trek for another 30 minutes until we reach Nayapul where we head by jeep back to Pokhara where we will stay at Lakeside (next to Few Tal - lake). You will have time to walk beside the lake, take a boat ride and browse the many shops along the main shopping strip. Tonight we can party and celebrate the end of our amazing adventure into the Annapurna Ranges.

This morning we travel by bus back to Kathmandu and on arrival taken to our hotels in Thamel. You can spend the rest of the day exploring Kathmandu or just wander around Thamel and sit in a café or bar and celebrate – again, the successful completion of your adventure in the Annapurna Conservation Area.

A Sherpa Teams staff member will take you to the airport for your final departure from Nepal. We hope that this epic trek will be firmly embedded in your memory and you will be considering your next trek with us into the Himalayan Mountains.

GOOD TO KNOW

Accommodation

You will be accommodated in 3-star hotels in Kathmandu. During the trek, we will be staying at lodges/ teahouses. You may find comfort and better quality teahouses - having attached bathroom at lower levels- until you reach higher elevations, where the accommodation is more basic with bare necessities.

Meals during the trek

In Kathmandu, your hotel includes breakfast, whereas all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be provided during the trek. A staple food of the Manang & Mustang regions is potatoes, oats, buckwheat, Sherpa stew, and Tibetan bread. Sherpa’s’ started farming potatoes when the first seeds were introduced to the region in the early 90s. There is a limited choice of food at higher elevations and except many potato dishes. Potatoes are high in carbohydrates – an excellent source of energy needed at high altitudes.

Transportation

We use a private car for sightseeing and for the airport to hotel pick and drop off. We use public transportation or local buses during the trek.

Physical fitness

This can be a challenging trek where you often have to walk 6-7 hours a day. You need past experience of hiking or trekking but if you have done any kind of trekking activities then it is always a plus! We have met people from all walks of life, shapes, and sizes who have completed the trek. The only difficult part is when altitude sickness strikes and the effect that it can have on your body. Before leaving for Nepal it is good if you can prepare yourself physically by increasing your stamina and oxygen intake.

Remember – The better prepared – the more enjoyable your trek!

Yes, you can. No matter who you are, as long as you are reasonably fit, can walk for 5-6 hours a day and trek/hike a few uphill, Sherpa Expedition and Trekking team will support you to the fullest to transform your dream of standing at Annapurna Circuit into reality.

The pre-monsoon (February, March, April and May) and post monsoon (late September, October, November and December) are considered the best for the Annapurna Circuit trek as the weather conditions become favorable during this time, providing you with good visibility and a suitable atmosphere for Annapurna Circuit Trekking.

No, there is no age limit for the trek to Annapurna Circuit but, you need to be in good physical shape and have a positive attitude. We also suggest you to prior to the excursion though we suggest you to please see your doctor and obtain necessary permission and advice, as well as medications for traveling in extreme altitude prior to the excursion.

During trekking, you will be served meals in the teahouses. Typical meals are noodles, rice, pasta or potato dishes along with vegetables and egg/chicken/meat dishes. Other items mostly served as breakfasts include egg, pancake, bread, porridge, muesli, and toasts with peanut butter and honey.

A teahouse trekking accommodation will be made for you for the Annapurna Circuit Trekking whereby you will be able to stay at tea house (Local lodge) and have wholesome food and neat and clean comfortable bed throughout your trekking journey. This form of arrangement also allows you to carry less baggage; you can trek at your own pace and enjoy the Annapurna panorama on your own schedule. It is also an eco-friendly way of trekking whereby trekkers can have more contact with the local people.

Most of the teahouses on the Annapurna Circuit trail have squat toilet facilities but recently built lodges have western-style toilets as well. Nowadays, flush toilets are also being introduced with number of increasing foreign mountaineers each year. It is highly recommended to carry your own toilet paper and other required toiletries. Hot shower facilities are available. The most common type is a bucket shower, usual buckets with tap filled with hot water and placed in a shower room. Hot shower costs from US$ 2 to 5 per use and the price increases along with the elevation. Attached bathrooms and toilets are not available unless you book for a luxury lodge during the Annapurna Circuit trek.

What you want to wear depends on you but we suggest you wear warm clothes during the Annapurna Circuit Trekking. A down jacket, thermal longs and top, comfortable trekking trousers, t-shirts, fleece, windproof jacket, hat, scarf, and gloves might be useful. There are numerous trekking shops in the Thamel area of Kathmandu where you can get all of these items in both local and branded stores alike. Sherpa Expedition and Trekking may also accompany and assist you if required.

During the Annapurna Circuit Trekking, you will be on a long journey for which you will need two bags to keep your belongings. A rucksack/duffle bag and a day bag for personal items. Sherpa Expedition and Trekking will provide you with a duffle bag (which is need to refund after the trek) that you can use throughout your entire journey and even afterward. These bags are durable and hence perfect for any kind of trekking journey. While the duffle bag will be carried by the potters, you will have to carry a day bag on your own. A day bag is a small backpack that has enough room for everything you will need on a day hike such as lunch, water, extra clothing and perhaps a few personnel items like camera, battery chargers, etc.

If possible, we suggest you bring your own equipment. However, sleeping bags and down jackets will be provided to you by Sherpa Expedition and Trekking. With regards to trekking poles, if you are used to walking with it then take them with you, as you will probably find them useful especially on the way down. They are not essential though and the walk is manageable without them. It is mostly a personal preference. If you prefer to take the trekking poles with you on the trekking then you can either bring your own pole or buy it from numerous options available in Kathmandu itself.

Yes, if you have a bag of extra clothing for when you return from the trekking, you will be able to store it safely in Kathmandu Sherpa Expedition and Trekking office. The storage facility is provided by most hotels and lodges in Kathmandu or you can also store it in our office for the duration of the trekking.

Our itinerary has been specially tailored to prevent any kind of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) while moving up to higher altitudes. Normally, altitude sickness starts from 3,600 meters and above. You will be trekking at a relatively slow and gradual pace as part of the acclimatization process. Cut off caffeinated, alcoholic and smoking items. Drink at least 4 liters of water a day. Trek slow. Don't skip the acclimatization days. Better to continue with Diamox (if any symptoms show up). Drink Garlic Soup. In the higher elevation, there is less oxygen in the air and this is more so while crossing high passes. Our expert guides will advise you on how to avoid AMS and treat it when/ if required.

Make sure to have both medical and evacuation insurance before coming to Nepal for Annapurna Circuit Trekking. You should be careful in choosing a policy while traveling to a Himalayan country like Nepal as some insurance companies may make special exceptions for adventure travel. If you are confused about the insurance, please inform us and we will help you. It is usually better to arrange your insurance in your country before travel.

The trekking will be 5-7 hours a day depending upon the landscape and destination.

It takes 4 to 11 days to reach Base Camp depending upon the mode of transportation and packages of Sherpa Expedition and Trekking offers.

We at Sherpa Expedition and Trekking Team always have the safety, comfort, and satisfaction of our valued customers as our foremost priority at all times, and we assure you a wonderful and unforgettable time with us in our beautiful country. Sherpa team members of Sherpa Expedition and Trekking will be carrying all the necessary gear, equipment, and first aid kits and they have extensive first aid training. If a trekker falls sick on high altitude, the leader will decide whether to continue the trek. In case of emergency, Sherpa Expedition and Trekking have a rescue helicopter to bring you back from the higher elevation. Moreover, Sherpa Expedition and Trekking also provides oximeter to monitor the oxygen level at high altitude and offers regular health check-up facilities.

You can either trek on foot or by a flight. Sherpa Expedition and Trekking offer exciting and reasonable flight to Pokhara for 4 days and 10 days. Sherpa Expedition and Trekking can also customize your tour as per your necessity.

The flights are usually regular between September and May. But due to high altitude, bad weather and unforeseen technical issues, you may experience a delay or cancellation of the flight. On the occurrence of such events, Sherpa Expedition and Trekking tourist bus will be arranged.

Sherpa Expedition and Trekking will provide one porter for two trekkers to carry 20 kgs of luggage (maximum 10 kg for each trekker). Please be sure your porters are not overloaded because they do not carry only your equipment but also lift your spirit to reach new heights, and your love, affection, and generosity can be the reason for them to work hard to take you to your destination. However, the weight limit on flights to the Annapurna region, basically to Pokhara is a total of 20 kgs including hand bag and you need to pay an extra amount per kg for the excess baggage. Sherpa Expedition and Trekking pays up to 5 kgs of extra baggage making your total to 20 kgs with your hand bag.

Garlic soup is a must while trekking. Sherpa Expedition and Trekking recommend trekkers to drink green tea, lemon tea, hot lemon ginger tea and drink at least 2-4 liters of water a day. However, it is better to avoid alcohol and alcoholic beverages, caffeinated items, and hot-chocolates at high altitude.

Sherpa Expedition and Trekking won’t recommend non-veg items because the meat in such places may not hygienic and healthy. Sherpa Expedition and Trekking also encourage to avoid dairy and cheesy items and strongly suggest not to consume them during the trek. So, our packages are suitable for both vegan and vegetarians.

Your guide and porters are a big reason why you got a chance to feel something very few can have. Apart from guiding and carrying your necessities and being mindful of your safety, they want to see you happily succeeded more than anyone like family and help you successfully complete the trek safely. So, your tips reflect gratitude towards them. So, tipping is a recommended culture for porters and guide in Nepal as a gesture of thankfulness.

Sherpa Expedition and Trekking will introduce dozens of shops selling knock-off gear in Kathmandu. You can also barter those gears at the knock-off places but be sure you keep the receipt safely. Moreover, you can rent the needed gears if you do not want to buy them.

Yes, most guesthouses offer Wi-Fi, for a small charge. it cost USD$5 per day.

ATM services are available only in Pokhara & Jomsom. However, the services might not work or run out of cash. Therefore, we suggest you carry a small amount of money to buy snacks, etc during the trekking.

Most of the tea houses/ lodges have electricity whereby you will be able to charge your iPod or camera batteries. Please note that lodges/tea houses will charge you some extra money for the services. The fee may vary from 1 USD to 5 USD per hour.
