ISLAND PEAK CLIMBING 9 DAYS

Sherpa Expeditions' 9-day Island Peak climbing trip is the ideal choice for those who are hard-pressed for time but looking for the exhilaration of standing on the summit of one of Nepal’s most famous mountains. This short yet adventurous trek takes you through some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in the Everest region and works to help you acclimate to altitude in a short time.

For your trek, we take a thrilling flight out of Kathmandu to Lukla, where you are greeted by extensive views of the Himalayas and the Everest region, including Mount Everest. From Lukla, you'll hike through the scenic Sherpa villages, thick forests, and along the rapids of the Dudh Koshi River as you make your way to further elevations. As you go, you'll visit places like the bustling Khumbu-region center of Namche Bazaar, and continue on to scenic high-altitude villages like Tengboche and Dingboche that have, on clear days, the best mountain views on the planet.

The trail leads you to Chhukung, where you stay a few days for acclimatization before you hike to Island Peak Base Camp. For the final ascent of Island Peak (6,165m), you will need to push up for ten hours from Base Camp to the top. The ascent includes walking on a glacier, fixed rope sections, and a steep climb, but the reward is a view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and other towering peaks in the region from the summit.

After reaching the summit, you’ll descend to Chhukung before hopping on a scenic helicopter flight back to Lukla, a time saver that also provides another overhead perspective on the dramatic landscape. You will then fly back to Kathmandu from Lukla and end an amazing Himalayan journey.

A 9-day mission perfect for anyone wanting a short, sharp hit of the best of Nepal’s high mountains that combines cultural discovery, high-altitude trekking, and technical climbing , all with stunning Himalayan views.

ITINERARY

Expand All

Your adventure begins with an exciting mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, one of the most scenic short flights in the world. After landing, you’ll meet your trekking team and start your trek with a gentle descent through forested trails and Sherpa villages. The route to Phakding follows the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several hanging suspension bridges and offering views of lush hillsides and prayer stones. Overnight in a cozy teahouse in Phakding.

Today you’ll enter Sagarmatha National Park and follow a winding trail through rhododendron and pine forests. Crossing the famed Hillary Suspension Bridge, you begin the steep climb to Namche Bazaar. As you gain elevation, you might catch your first view of Mount Everest on a clear day. After the tough ascent, you’ll reach Namche Bazaar, the gateway to Everest and a vibrant Sherpa town filled with shops, bakeries, and mountain culture.

To prepare your body for the high altitudes ahead, you’ll spend the day acclimatizing in Namche. A short hike to the Everest View Hotel (3,880m) is recommended, where you’ll enjoy sweeping views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. You can also explore the Sherpa Culture Museum and the local marketplace. Acclimatization is key to a successful summit later in the trip.

Leaving Namche, the trail ascends gradually through alpine forests and along mountain ridges. You’ll pass through Tengboche, home to the largest monastery in the Khumbu region. Take some time to admire the Tengboche Monastery with the spectacular backdrop of Ama Dablam before continuing your trek to the quiet mountain village of Pangboche, where you’ll spend the night.

Today's route takes you deeper into the Imja Valley, surrounded by stunning snow-capped peaks. You’ll pass through Dingboche before ascending further to Chhukung, a small settlement nestled beneath Island Peak, Lhotse, and Nuptse. This is one of the last villages before Base Camp, and it offers dramatic views and a peaceful atmosphere to rest.

This is another vital acclimatization day, with a challenging but rewarding hike to Chhukung Ri, a rocky peak offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains including Makalu, Baruntse, and the Imja Glacier. Reaching over 5,500 meters, this hike prepares your body for the summit attempt. After descending, spend the rest of the day resting and hydrating in Chhukung.

The trail to Base Camp leads across rocky terrain, glacial moraines, and scenic alpine valleys. As you approach Island Peak Base Camp, you’ll feel the air thinning and the excitement building. Once there, you’ll settle into your tented campsite, have a final gear check, and receive a climbing briefing from your guides. Rest early in preparation for your summit push the next day.

This is the most demanding and most rewarding day of your journey. You’ll begin your summit attempt early in the morning, often around 1–2 AM. The climb involves crossing glaciers, ascending fixed rope sections, and navigating a steep ice wall near the summit ridge. From the top of Island Peak, you’ll enjoy unparalleled views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and other towering giants. After spending a brief time at the summit, descend carefully back to Base Camp and onward to Chhukung for a well-earned rest.

You’ll begin your descent to Dingboche, enjoying the return trek with new perspectives. From Dingboche, you’ll board a scenic helicopter ride to Lukla, saving time and energy. After a short break in Lukla, take your return flight to Kathmandu, where your unforgettable Island Peak climbing adventure officially concludes.

GOOD TO KNOW

Best Time to Trek

The ideal seasons for climbing Island Peak are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These months offer the best weather conditions, with clear skies, stable temperatures, and stunning views of the Himalayan peaks. During these periods, the trails are less likely to be obstructed by heavy snowfall or rainfall, and the visibility of the Everest range is at its best. Avoid trekking during the monsoon season (June to August), as the trails can become slippery and dangerous.

Fitness and Experience Requirements

Island Peak climbing requires trekkers to have high physical fitness and some prior trekking experience. The trek involves several days of hiking at high altitudes, with steep ascents and challenging terrain. The final climb to the summit requires basic mountaineering skills, such as the use of crampons and ice axes, and a good level of stamina. It’s important to train beforehand, especially in aerobic activities like running, hiking, or cycling, to ensure you can manage the strenuous nature of the climb.

Acclimatization is Key

As you will be trekking to altitudes above 5,000 meters (16,400 feet), proper acclimatization is crucial to prevent altitude sickness. The Island Peak itinerary is designed with several rest days and gradual elevation gains to allow your body to adjust to the thinning air. If you start to feel symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headaches, nausea, or dizziness, it’s essential to communicate with your guide and take the necessary precautions.

Climbing Equipment Provided

All technical climbing equipment, such as harnesses, ice axes, crampons, and ropes, will be provided by your trek operator. However, it’s important to bring your own personal gear, including thermal clothing, waterproof gloves, high-altitude boots, and sunglasses with UV protection. Additionally, make sure you pack a sleeping bag suitable for cold temperatures, as nights can get extremely cold at higher altitudes.

Experienced Guides and Support Team

You will be guided by a team of professional local Sherpas, highly skilled in high-altitude climbing. These Sherpas are not only excellent guides but also act as mentors, offering advice on acclimatization and climbing techniques. They are well-trained in handling emergencies and are familiar with the conditions and challenges posed by the region. In addition, porters will carry your gear, allowing you to focus on the trek itself.

Altitude Sickness Prevention

Altitude sickness is a concern for any trek above 3,000 meters, and Island Peak involves trekking above 6,000 meters. Symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and shortness of breath. If any symptoms occur, it’s crucial to inform your guide immediately. To minimize the risk, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and take it slow. Your guide will ensure that the trek has enough rest stops to help with acclimatization.

Insurance for Safety

Having comprehensive travel insurance is essential for this kind of expedition. Your insurance should cover high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation (helicopter rescue), which can be expensive. Ensure that it includes coverage for unforeseen events like accidents, illnesses, trip cancellations, and gear loss. It’s a good idea to consult your insurance provider before the trip to confirm that you have the appropriate coverage for high-altitude mountaineering.
