8 Days Island Peak Climbing is an exhilarating adventure for a trekker looking for a real alpine challenge in the heart of the great Himalayan mountain ranges. This is a short and powerful trip that starts with spectacular 35 minutes of mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, where the real adventure begins. You’ll enjoy a stunning aerial view of the snow-covered mountains, which only gives you a taste of what your upcoming adventure has in store.
After reaching Lukla, the trail passes through the subtropical air and takes you on an easy descent to Phakding with the stunning vista of the Khumbu region. You’ll tramp alongside the wind-blown forests along the Dudh Koshi River, staying at Sherpa houses in the serene forests of pine.
The next day, the trail climbs to Namche Bazaar, the lively mountain town and Khumbu’s business centre. Namche sits at 3,440 meters and provides the first tantalising view of Mount Everest. It’s also an important acclimatization stop, allowing your body to get used to the growing altitude.
Further up into the Himalaya,s the trek follows into the heart of the Ama Dablam mountain, at Pangboche, which is a serene village below the magnificent face of Ama Dablam. Here you have some of the classic views of the Khumbu and a feeling of calm before the storm of rocky terrain that lies ahead.
From there, it will be on to the stunning Imja Valley and the village of Chhukung. Enveloped with glacial views and towering peaks, this camp provides one more opportunity to acclimate and mentally/physically prepare to summit the day after. The trail continues from here to Island Peak Base Camp, where final gear checks and safety briefings will be given.
The summit day is strenuous and long. At 6,189m, Island Peak (Imja Tse) is a serious alpine peak and involves glacier travel, crevasse crossings, fixed rope ascents, and a final ascent up a steep snow slope to the summit ridge. The reward? A limitless spread of Himalayan giants - Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, and Baruntse, a climber’s dream.
And then you will descend to Dingboche following the summit for rest and recuperation. A scenic helicopter flight brings you back to Lukla, providing a final birds-eye perspective of the terrain you conquered. You will take your return flight to Kathmandu from Lukla and complete your trek in the capital.
A well-acclimatized and physically strong trekker has the opportunity to reach the summit of Island Peak on this 8-day expedition. This climb has everything–the rugged trails, the cultural immersion, a real Himalayan summit to bag, and more than just another number in elevation: it offers a once-in-a-lifetime adventure up into the soul of the highest mountains on earth.
Important Alert:: This climbing expedition is only suitable for experienced trekkers. Due to the rapid itinerary, high altitude, and technical sections of the climb, prior high-altitude trekking and basic mountaineering skills are essential. This trip is not recommended for beginners or those without proper acclimatization experience.
Your thrilling adventure begins with a 35-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, a small mountain airport nestled in the Himalayas. The flight offers stunning aerial views of the surrounding peaks, including Mount Everest. After landing in Lukla, you’ll meet your trekking team and embark on your first day’s journey to Phakding. The trail is relatively gentle, leading you through charming Sherpa villages, dense pine forests, and alongside the sparkling Dudh Koshi River. Phakding is a peaceful village where you’ll spend your first night.
Today’s trek will bring you deeper into the Khumbu region. The trail crosses several suspension bridges and ascends steadily, offering occasional views of the towering peaks surrounding the Dudh Koshi valley. As you reach Namche Bazaar, the vibrant trading hub of the Khumbu region, you’ll be welcomed by its bustling streets and Sherpa culture. Namche sits at 3,440m, and this is an important stop for acclimatization. On the way, you may catch your first glimpse of Mount Everest. Tonight, enjoy the comforts of a cozy teahouse and prepare for your upcoming days of exploration.
Acclimatization is key to ensuring your success at high altitudes. Today is a rest day in Namche Bazaar, but it’s not a day of complete rest. You’ll take a short hike up to Everest View Hotel for magnificent views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other majestic peaks. This hike also helps your body adjust to the altitude. Namche itself is a great place to explore, with local markets, bakeries, and shops to discover, along with an everest museum that showcases the region’s mountaineering history.
The trek today takes you along the high trails of the Khumbu Valley, with views of iconic peaks like Ama Dablam and Thamserku. As you trek through the villages of Tengboche, you’ll pass the famous Tengboche Monastery. After crossing a bridge, the trail continues upward to the serene village of Pangboche. Situated at 3,930m, Pangboche offers magnificent views of Everest and Ama Dablam. Tonight, stay in a local teahouse and enjoy the tranquility of this beautiful village.
On Day 5, you’ll leave the Pangboche valley and head toward Chhukung, located in the stunning Imja Valley. The trail begins with a gentle ascent, and the landscape around you gradually becomes more rugged and alpine. Along the way, enjoy expansive views of Island Peak, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse. After arriving in Chhukung, you’ll have time to relax and begin preparing for the more challenging days ahead. Chhukung offers a peaceful atmosphere, and it’s the perfect spot to rest and acclimatize further.
Today’s trek brings you closer to your goal: Island Peak Base Camp. The path from Chhukung to Base Camp is steep and rugged, as you begin crossing glacial moraines and boulder fields. As you gain altitude, the terrain becomes increasingly rocky and challenging. Upon reaching Island Peak Base Camp at 5,100m, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Island Peak and the surrounding peaks, including Lhotse and Makalu. The team will review your climbing gear, provide safety briefings, and prepare for your summit push.
This is the most challenging day of the expedition. You’ll begin your summit push in the early hours of the morning (around 1–2 AM) to take advantage of the colder and more stable conditions. The first part of the climb involves glacier travel, followed by fixed rope sections and steep, snow-covered terrain. As you reach the summit of Island Peak at 6,165m, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of the world’s highest peaks, including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Baruntse. After celebrating your success, descend safely back to Chhukung, where you’ll rest and recover after the long, demanding day.
After your summit, it’s time to head back down. First, you’ll trek to Dingboche, where you’ll have a short rest before catching a helicopter flight back to Lukla. The scenic helicopter ride offers one last aerial view of the mountains you’ve just conquered. From Lukla, take your return flight to Kathmandu, where your adventure concludes.
You’ll carry your personal gear and share some group equipment, so pack light with layered, weather-appropriate clothing—avoid cotton and choose breathable, insulating fabrics. A windproof duffle (provided and carried by porters) and water are included. Non-trekking items can be stored in Kathmandu. Sherpa Expedition & Trekking supplies all essential expedition gear.
It is important to invest in high-quality gear and ensure that everything fits properly and is in good condition. Additionally, consult with experienced climbers or a professional guide to ensure you have all the necessary gear and receive proper training on how to use it effectively and safely.
Note: Essential climbing equipment, including an ice axe, crampons, climbing boots, harness, helmet, safety rope, ascender (jumar), and carabiner, can be hired in Chhukung. The total cost is approximately USD 120 per person for a complete set.
Island Peak reaches an elevation of 6,189 meters (20,305 ft). Trekkers must be prepared for the physical and mental impact of high altitude. The itinerary includes acclimatization stops in Namche Bazaar and Chhukung, but prior experience at 4,000+ meters is highly recommended. Altitude sickness can affect anyone—regardless of fitness—so knowing the symptoms and listening to your body is key.
This is not a simple trek—Island Peak involves technical climbing. You’ll navigate glaciers, use fixed ropes, and ascend steep ice slopes near the summit. Previous experience with basic mountaineering tools like crampons, ascenders, and harnesses is necessary. A pre-climb training session at Base Camp is often provided by guides to review safety and rope techniques.
The 8-day itinerary is fast-paced and physically demanding. You'll trek long distances, carry gear at altitude, and climb steep sections on summit day. Cardio endurance, leg strength, and stamina are all critical. A training regimen 1–2 months before your trip is highly advised.
Himalayan weather is unpredictable. Expect anything from warm sunshine to snowstorms—even in peak seasons. Summit attempts typically begin very early (around 1–2 AM) to avoid afternoon winds. Be prepared with layered clothing, quality cold-weather gear, and mental flexibility.
Due to altitude risks and unpredictable conditions, emergency helicopter evacuation is sometimes necessary. That’s why comprehensive travel insurance that includes high-altitude rescue coverage is mandatory. Delays can also occur with Lukla flights—it's wise to keep a buffer day after your trip ends.
There’s a 15kg (33 lb) weight limit on flights to Lukla. Your packing list should focus on essentials like thermal layers, waterproof outerwear, glacier sunglasses, insulated gloves, and personal medications. Climbing equipment (ropes, helmets, etc.) is usually provided, but confirm with your tour operator in advance.
On the trek to Base Camp, you’ll stay in local teahouses—simple but cozy lodges offering beds and meals. Once you reach Island Peak Base Camp, you’ll switch to expedition tents, with meals prepared by a camp cook. Expect limited facilities and chilly nights.
As you gain altitude, charging electronics becomes more expensive and less reliable. Internet/Wi-Fi is available in some teahouses (for a fee), but don’t rely on it. Bring a power bank or solar charger, and consider this an opportunity to unplug and connect with nature.
You’ll be eating high-carb, energy-dense meals to fuel your body. Think dal bhat (lentils and rice), potatoes, noodles, soup, and eggs. At Base Camp, the diet is basic but adequate for summit preparation. Notify your guide in advance if you have dietary restrictions.
You’re trekking through sacred lands where Buddhism shapes daily life. Show respect at monasteries, ask before photographing locals, and follow your guide’s lead when interacting with communities. Understanding Sherpa culture will add depth and meaning to your journey.

It requires basic mountaineering skills such as using crampons, ice axes, and harnesses. Previous high-altitude trekking experience and good physical fitness are essential.
While not mandatory, prior climbing experience (including basic knowledge of glacier travel, rope work, and using mountaineering equipment) is highly recommended. If you're unsure, some guiding companies offer pre-trip training sessions to familiarize you with the equipment and techniques needed for the climb.
The best seasons for climbing Island Peak are pre-monsoon (March–May) and post-monsoon (September–November). These months offer stable weather, clear skies, and optimal climbing conditions. Avoid the monsoon season (June–August) as heavy rains and snowstorms can affect the climb.

Your guiding company will provide essential climbing gear like ropes and harnesses, but you must bring your personal gear. A detailed packing list will be given upon booking.
During the trek, you'll stay in teahouses in lower villages like Namche Bazaar, where basic amenities are available.
