Island Peak Climbing provides an intensive Everest trekking experience that has you scaling even higher peaks during its thrilling 7-day alpine excursion, specially designed for mountain trekkers seeking to hone their techniques among the towering giants of the Himalayas. The adventure begins with a thrilling 35-minute scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, crossing picturesque hills and snow-swathed peaks of eastern Nepal like never before.
Your trek commences after a short 30-minute drive to Rupi Valley with an easy walk into Phakding, passing through beautiful Sherpa villages and the beautiful pine forest following the Dudh Koshi River. The serene countryside acts as the calm before the challenging high-altitude storm.
On day two, you ascend to the colorful Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar at 3,440 meters. This is your first acclimatization point — and where you’ll first see Everest. The trek continues through the spiritual heart of the Khumbu Valley to Pangboche, with stunning views of the dramatic Ama Dablam, a popularly worshiped Himalayan gem.
From there, the trail goes to Chhukung, which is a little village located in the scenic Imja Valley. From vaccination clinics to blood donation sites to H1N1 virus education, this is a peaceful place where you can find the time you need to adjust and be ready for the push to Island Peak. Shortly, you will arrive at the Island Peak Base Camp – your launching point for the final push to the summit.
Island Peak Mountaineering Climbing Island Peak (6,189m) is a real mountaineering challenge. The climb consists of glacier travel, fixed ropes, and a steep final push to the summit ridge. It’s a tough but rewarding challenge, with views of Lhotse, Makalu, Baruntse, and other Himalayan heavy hitters to make your jaw drop.
After a summit day that sees you reach the top by the early morning, you descend to Dingboche for rest and consideration. To wrap up the adventure in style, you will also get a scenic helicopter ride back to Lukla, getting one last aerial sweep of the mountains before flying back to Kathmandu.
This is a surprisingly short but difficult trek, intended for fit, high-altitude, experienced trekkers. Cultural immersion, alpine climbing, and a view of some of the best scenery in the Himalaya, all combine to make the Island Peak climb one of the most unforgettable of all mountaineering adventures in the world’s biggest mountain range.
Important Alert:: This climbing expedition is only suitable for experienced trekkers. Due to the rapid itinerary, high altitude, and technical sections of the climb, prior high-altitude trekking and basic mountaineering skills are essential. This trip is not recommended for beginners or those without proper acclimatization experience.
Your journey begins with a breathtaking 35-minute mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, a small airstrip tucked into the Himalayas. Upon arrival, you'll meet your trekking crew and begin an easy hike through pine forests and Sherpa villages, following the Dudh Koshi River. The trail gently descends to the peaceful village of Phakding, your first overnight stop.
Today, the trail crosses several suspension bridges and ascends steadily through dense forest and rhododendron groves. You’ll officially enter Sagarmatha National Park before climbing the famous hill leading to Namche Bazaar, the bustling Sherpa capital. Here, you’ll enjoy your first panoramic view of Mount Everest and acclimatize in this vibrant mountain town.
Leaving Namche behind, you trek through alpine landscapes with incredible views of Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Everest. Passing through Tengboche with its iconic monastery, you descend slightly before reaching Pangboche. This charming village is home to one of the oldest monasteries in the region and is your last major settlement before heading deeper into the mountains.
Today’s route leads you into the quieter Imja Valley. As you ascend, the landscapes become more rugged and dramatic. Passing through Orsho and Dingboche, you eventually reach the small settlement of Chhukung, surrounded by towering Himalayan giants. This is a crucial stop for acclimatization before your summit attempt.
A short but steep hike takes you to Island Peak Base Camp. The trail winds through glacial moraines and rocky terrain as you gain altitude. Upon arrival, you’ll set up camp and go through a pre-climb briefing. Your guides will help you review rope techniques, gear usage, and safety measures in preparation for the early morning summit push.
This is the most demanding yet rewarding day of your journey. Starting around midnight, you'll climb gradually across glaciers, fixed rope sections, and a steep snow wall near the summit ridge. Upon reaching the top of Island Peak, you'll be rewarded with a jaw-dropping 360° panorama including Lhotse, Makalu, and Baruntse. After celebrating, you descend safely back to Base Camp, then continue on to Chhukung for a well-earned rest.
After a short hike to Dingboche, you’ll board a scenic helicopter flight back to Lukla—offering a final aerial farewell to the Himalayas. From Lukla, catch your scheduled flight back to Kathmandu, where your unforgettable adventure concludes.
You will be carrying all of your gear and share some of the cluster gear. Keeping your pack light is important, so choose light-weight clothing and equipment. Be sure to have a range of clothing suitable for all conditions. Sudden change of weather may require layering of clothing. Three layers will meet your needs. Avoid cotton or fabrics that do not maintain heat when cold. Comfortable durable wool (or proven fabrics) that breathe and expel sweat lends itself to an additional pleasant experience!'
We will offer complimentary water and a windproof duffle that you'll use on the trek - carried by porters. The duffle is yours to keep once at the end of the trek. You can safely leave your bag, together with your non-trekking requirements, at our office in Katmandu and collect them upon your return.
All equipment, such as base camp tents, room accessories, climbing rope, ice screws, snow bar and ice hammer is provided by Sherpa Expedition & Trekking.
It is important to invest in high-quality gear and ensure that everything fits properly and is in good condition. Additionally, consult with experienced climbers or a professional guide to ensure you have all the necessary gear and receive proper training on how to use it effectively and safely.
Note: Essential climbing equipment including an ice axe, crampons, climbing boots, harness, helmet, safety rope, ascender (jumar), and carabiner can be hired in Chhukung. The total cost is approximately USD 120 per person for a complete set.
Island Peak reaches a height of 6,189 meters (20,305 ft), and altitude sickness is a serious consideration. Prior experience at elevations over 4,000 meters is strongly recommended. Your body needs time to adjust, and the itinerary includes essential acclimatization stops—but personal preparation is key.
Though not a full expedition peak, Island Peak involves real mountaineering. You'll need to use crampons, harnesses, and fixed ropes on icy slopes. A basic knowledge of alpine climbing techniques—or prior guided training—is important. If you’re unsure, consider a pre-trip mountaineering course.
This is an intensive trek and climb compressed into 7 days, ideal for highly fit trekkers. Expect long hiking days, steep ascents, and early morning summit pushes in freezing conditions. Cardiovascular strength, endurance, and mental grit are all crucial.
Both the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and the return helicopter ride are weather sensitive. Delays are common due to fog or wind in the mountains. It's smart to keep an extra day or two in your schedule, just in case.
Once you're past Namche Bazaar, facilities become increasingly basic. Expect limited Wi-Fi, cold temperatures, and simple meals. At Base Camp, accommodation is typically in tents with minimal comforts—this is the wilderness, after all!
Due to flight weight limits and the rugged terrain, pack light but smart. Essential gear includes a down jacket, mountaineering boots, glacier sunglasses, and personal medication. Your guide will usually provide group climbing gear (ropes, ice axes, etc.).
Beyond physical ability, this climb challenges your mental strength. Thin air, cold mornings, and technical sections can wear down even experienced trekkers. Stay positive, stay hydrated, and trust your guides—mindset makes all the difference.

Island Peak is considered a moderately technical climb. While it’s one of Nepal’s “trekking peaks,” it involves glacier travel, steep ice and snow sections, and fixed ropes. It’s suitable for experienced trekkers with basic mountaineering skills or those who’ve completed training beforehand.
Yes, previous high-altitude trekking and some climbing experience are highly recommended. You should be familiar with using crampons, harnesses, and ascending fixed ropes, especially for the summit section.
The best seasons are pre-monsoon (March–May) and post-monsoon (late September–November). These months offer more stable weather, better visibility, and safer climbing conditions.
Island Peak stands at 6,189 meters (20,305 feet). Altitude sickness is a serious concern. The itinerary includes acclimatization stops, but your body’s adaptation varies. It’s essential to stay hydrated, go slowly, and notify your guide at the first signs of symptoms.
You’ll need mountaineering boots, a climbing harness, helmet, crampons, glacier glasses, down jacket, and other cold-weather gear. Group climbing gear is often provided by guiding companies. A full packing list will usually be supplied upon booking.
During the trek, you’ll stay in teahouses or lodges, which offer basic accommodation. At Island Peak Base Camp, you’ll sleep in tents, usually with provided sleeping mats and communal meals prepared by your crew.
Absolutely. You must have comprehensive travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation—especially helicopter rescue. It's a requirement for most guiding companies in Nepal.
Yes, but access is limited and comes at a cost in higher villages. Bring a power bank or solar charger for convenience. Charging points become less reliable the higher you go.
Teahouses provide a variety of meals including dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, pasta, soups, and more. At Base Camp, meals are more basic but nutritious, focusing on carbs and energy. Dietary restrictions can often be accommodated with advance notice.
With proper acclimatization, experienced guides, and safety precautions, Island Peak is relatively safe. However, like any high-altitude climb, it carries risks such as altitude sickness, falls, and unpredictable weather. Always follow your guide’s instructions and be honest about your condition.
