Island Peak Climbing Island Peak Climbing Island Peak Climbing is an outstanding Himalayan voyage including an adventure trek up and a climbing quest at the top of 6,165 meters. One of them is this favorite adventure for experienced trekkers looking to try their hand at alpine climbing, surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountains in the world. Normally, done in 10 days, it offers a nice mixture of physical challenge, cultural contact, and natural landscape views.
The adventure begins with a thrilling flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, gifting us our first glimpses of the giant peaks that characterise the Everest region. From there, the route meanders through the heart of Khumbu, en route to the classic Sherpa villages, dense pine forests, and deep river valleys spanned by those famous suspension bridges. Ascending along the trail, trekkers are graced with progressively dramatic panoramas, each step bringing them closer to the icy giants of the Himalayas.
The success of these climbs depends very much on acclimatization days, incorporated into stopovers at popular stopping points such as Namche Bazaar, Pangboche, and Chhukung. Together, these rest days help to acclimatize to the altitude as well as serving as a chance to hike around and explore the scenery. Ama Dablam Base Camp side trek is the most exciting part of climbing this legendary peak, offering climbers excellent views and symmetry of this stunning peak.
The scenery becomes very cold and glaciated as you approach Island Peak Base Camp. It is here that climbers receive a final kit check, and a technical briefing in the lead up to the summit push. The ascent involves glacier travel, fixed ropes, and a steep pull to the summit ridge. Despite being strenuous, the reward of standing at the top is second to none, marrored by a 360° vista of the highest peaks of the Himalayas, including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu.
After summiting, you descend to Chhukung, and instead of walking the long and difficult return, a three-hour helicopter flight to Lukla ends the journey with some incredible scenery and saves time. One last flight to Kathmandu concludes your escape with memories of one of Nepal’s most iconic ascents.
Island Peak is much more than simply a climb: this iconic peak combines technical mountaineering with the classic culture of the Sherpas and unparalleled mountain scenery. For those in search of a challenge and a place in their midst, among some of the highest mountains in the world, make a Trek to Everest Base Camp, a true Himalayan classic.
Your adventure begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, offering panoramic views of the Himalayas. From Lukla, trek through vibrant Sherpa villages and lush forests to reach Phakding, a peaceful village by the Dudh Koshi River.
The trek continues as you ascend to Namche Bazaar, the gateway to the Everest region. Along the way, enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains and pass through picturesque Sherpa settlements. Namche is a bustling trading hub, perfect for resting and acclimatizing.
Take the day to acclimatize to the high altitude. You can hike to Everest View Hotel for an incredible panoramic view of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other peaks. The rest day is essential for adjusting to the altitude and preparing for the higher climbs ahead.
On this day, the trail takes you to Pangboche, a quiet village surrounded by magnificent views of Ama Dablam. The hike will take you through dense forests, offering breathtaking views of the towering Himalayan peaks.
Spend the day acclimatizing with a scenic hike to the Ama Dablam Base Camp. This beautiful spot gives you a close-up view of one of the most iconic peaks in the Himalayas. The trek is challenging but provides fantastic photographic opportunities of Ama Dablam.
Continue your trek towards Chhukung, a small village nestled in the Imja Valley. The trail offers fantastic views of the surrounding peaks and prepares you for the higher altitude as you move deeper into the Everest region.
For further acclimatization, hike to Chhukung Ri, a peak at 5,550m. The trek to the top offers stunning views of Island Peak, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse. This hike helps your body adjust to the thin air before the summit push.
The trek continues to Island Peak Base Camp. As you approach, the landscape becomes more rugged, with magnificent views of the surrounding glaciers. At Base Camp, you’ll prepare for the final push to the summit.
This is the most challenging day of the trek. After an early start, climb to the summit of Island Peak at 6,165m. The ascent involves glacier travel, steep snow slopes, and fixed ropes. Upon reaching the summit, enjoy 360-degree views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and surrounding peaks before descending back to Chhukung.
Conclude your adventure with a trek to Dingboche, followed by a helicopter ride to Lukla, which offers spectacular aerial views of the Everest region. From Lukla, fly back to Kathmandu to complete your memorable Himalayan adventure.
You’ll carry your personal gear and share some group equipment, so pack light with layered, weather-appropriate clothing—avoid cotton and choose breathable, insulating fabrics. A windproof duffle (provided and carried by porters) and water are included. Non-trekking items can be stored in Kathmandu. Sherpa Expedition & Trekking supplies all essential expedition gear.
It is important to invest in high-quality gear and ensure that everything fits properly and is in good condition. Additionally, consult with experienced climbers or a professional guide to ensure you have all the necessary gear and receive proper training on how to use it effectively and safely.
Note: Essential climbing equipment, including an ice axe, crampons, climbing boots, harness, helmet, safety rope, ascender (jumar), and carabiner, can be hired in Chhukung. The total cost is approximately USD 120 per person for a complete set.
The most favorable times to climb Island Peak are in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is more stable, skies are clearer, and the mountain views are at their best. Avoid the monsoon season due to rain and poor trail conditions, and winter if you’re not experienced in extreme cold.
Island Peak is suitable for trekkers with previous high-altitude hiking experience and good physical fitness. While it's categorized as a trekking peak, it includes technical sections like glacier travel, fixed rope ascents, and steep climbs. Regular cardiovascular training and endurance hikes prior to the trip are strongly recommended.
Proper acclimatization is built into the itinerary with stops in Namche Bazaar, Pangboche, and Chhukung. These breaks help reduce the risk of altitude sickness and improve your chances of a successful summit. You’ll also complete acclimatization hikes, such as to Chhukung Ri, which simulates summit conditions.
Technical gear such as crampons, harnesses, ropes, and ice axes are required for the summit push. If you haven’t used these before, your guide will provide basic training at Base Camp. Climbers should be prepared for rope sections, crevasses, and exposed ridgelines, especially during summit day.
Pack lightweight but warm clothing including thermal layers, a down jacket, gloves, and a four-season sleeping bag. Waterproof boots suitable for crampon use are a must. Trekking poles, UV-protection sunglasses, sunscreen, and a personal first aid kit are also important. Technical equipment is usually provided by your tour company.
Know the signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) such as headaches, fatigue, or nausea. Hydrate regularly, eat well, and inform your guide of any symptoms. The team is trained in emergency procedures, and helicopter evacuations are available if needed. Comprehensive travel insurance covering emergency evacuation is mandatory.
You’ll need several permits:
Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit
TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)
Island Peak Climbing Permit
These are typically arranged by your trekking agency, but ensure you bring passport-sized photos, a valid passport, and cash (USD or NPR) for documentation.
Along the trek, you’ll stay in teahouses offering basic rooms and local meals. Expect hearty, carb-rich foods like dal bhat, noodles, and soups. At Island Peak Base Camp, you'll sleep in tents and meals will be prepared by the expedition cook team. While options are more limited at high altitudes, the food is nutritious and designed to sustain climbers.
Many climbers choose to return from Chhukung or Dingboche to Lukla by helicopter after the summit. It’s a scenic ride that saves time and avoids the long trek back. It's also a great backup in case of fatigue or unpredictable weather during descent.
Wi-Fi and mobile network coverage are available in lower villages like Namche, but it gets weaker as you ascend. Charging your devices comes at a cost in teahouses, so bring extra batteries or a solar charger. Once at Base Camp, expect zero connectivity—a true escape into the mountains.
