EVEREST THREE PASS TREK

Here is a trek that will take you into the heart of snow-covered Himalayan Mountains, to alpine glaciers and an opportunity to see snow leopards, musk deer, red panda, and other indigenous species in the Sagamartha National Park. This has been one of the most popular destinations for climbers and trekkers since Mt. Everest was first climbed by Sir Edmund Hilary & Norgay Tensing in 1953.

The Everest High Three Pass trek will take you to high altitudes and will include crossing Renjo La Pass (5360m), Cho-La Pass (5420m), and Kongma-La Pass (5535m). You will also have some fantastic views of Mt. Gokyo Ri (5,360m), and climb Mt. Kala Patthar (5,545m) and visit Everest Base Camp (5,364m). The incredible landscape and magnificent views during the trek are unbelievable. Personal fitness is critical due to trekking at these high altitudes. It is important that you do some preparation prior to joining this trek. This is a rare opportunity to look skyward to four towering 8,000m plus peaks; Mt. Cho Oyu (8,201m), Mt. Makalu (8,463m), Mt. Lhotse (8,516 m) and Mt. Everest (8,848m). This trek also takes  us to the remote valley of Nangpa La and the Sherpa villages of Thame and Marlung.

It is a physically demanding climb to Dingboche (4410m), Kongma-La Pass (5535m) via Tengboche (3860 m) and Kongma La Pass (5550m). The views from these places will be embedded in your memory for the rest of your life. Kongma La Pass is the highest pass of these three passes. From Dingboche we head higher and after crossing Khongma La Pass via High Camp we reach Lobuche (4910 m) and then head to Gorekshep (5140m). Gorekshep is a cross-road where the trail leads to Kala Patthar and Everest Base Camp. For some of the very best views of Mt. Everest we trek to the well known vantage point at Kala Pathar (5644m) - commonly referred to as ‘black rock”. It is mostly down-hill from here as we trek back to Gorekshep and then down to Everest Base Camp (5360m) via Gorak Shep (5164m). At EBC we can see the Khumbu Glacier, the world’s highest glacier and one that you have to pass on your way to Everest.

From EBC we descend to Lobuche and then on to Cho-La pass (5420m), the trickiest of the three passes, starting near Lobuche Kharka through to Thangnak. On the trek to Thangnak Kharka via Dzongla (4830m) we can see Awi Peak (5245m), Lobuche Peak, Nirekha Peak and other snow clad mountains. After taking in the spectacular views of these mountains in the vicinity of Everest we continue on to Gokyo through the Gokyo Valley and its many lakes, after which we then climb to Gokyo Ri (5420m) considered as the best viewpoint in the entire Himalayas. Leaving Gokyo Ri we head to High Camp via the Renjo-La Pass 5360 m. As with Gokyo Ri, the Renjo-La Pass offers us similar great views of the Himalayan Ranges. Leaving High Camp, we head back down to Thame via Lungden (4380m) and Marlung (4210 m). Continuing down we trek to Lukla via Namche Bazaar completing the round-trip through the 3 passes.

Sherpa Teams have been taking tours into the Himalayan Mountains since 1977 and have an excellent reputation for taking good care of their clients. We will take care of all permits, meals and accommodation on the trek.

ITINERARY

A representative from Sherpa Teams will meet you at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport and take you to your hotel in Thamel – the tourist hub of Kathmandu. On arrival at your hotel, there will be a briefing regarding your Everest Three Passes Trek.

This morning we drive to the domestic terminal of Kathmandu Airport for the 35-minute flight to Lukla where we land on a precarious strip of tarmac overlooking the Dudh Koshi River. We have quite an easy trek to Phakding. This trek takes us through farming lands of the Sherpas and passes through several villages on the trail. Nowadays, many Sherpas make their living solely from providing support to trekkers. We will also pass by many mani stones, which are stones carved in Tibetan script, and of course, you will see loads of prayer flags along the trail.  We then arrive at our lodge on the banks of the Dudh Koshi River.

Today we cross the Dudh Koshi River and late we show our trek permit at the Sagarmatha National Park office in Monju, the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park. We then ascend to Namche Bazaar crossing the Hillary Suspension Bridge. We will stay in Namche Bazaar at a teahouse.

Before climbing to higher altitudes it is necessary to acclimatize.  Health experts recommend we stay active and moving during the rest day. Today we can choose between taking a hike to Thame or visit Khunde, or relax and explore Namche Bazaar – the home to many Sherpas employed in the trekking business. Namche Bazaar is the main centre of the Everest (Khumbu) region and has government offices, ATMs, Internet cafes, shops, restaurants, a bakery, and a vibrant market each Friday evening and Saturday. If we decide to take a vertical trek during the day it will help us to properly acclimatize. Our guide will also take us to the Tourist Visitor Center close to the headquarter of the Sagarmatha National Park where we can see a variety of artifacts related to the first Everest climbers, learn about the Sherpa culture and the many flora and fauna of the Everest region.

On the trail to Tengboche we have some amazing views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt Ama Dablam, and Thamserku. The trail zigzags through the hills until we reach Tengboche where we will stay overnight at a teahouse.

The early morning light at Tengboche provides us with a perfect photo opportunity of the surrounding scenery. On the trail, we pass numerous Chortens and Mani walls and several small villages and will stop for lunch at a village with a reputation for serving delicious food. In the afternoon we head north to Pheriche or alternatively can follow an eastward trail beneath the towering north face of Mt Ama Dablam. The trail is fairly easy-going as we enter the Imja Valley that slowly widens as we get nearer to the Lobuche River. We will then head down to the river and then have a steep climb heading up to Dingboche. Dingboche is unusual in that its fields are surrounded by stone walls, protected them from grazing animals and strong winds, with crops of barley, buckwheat, and potatoes. Tonight we stay at Dingboche.

Today is another very important day on the trek and is dedicated to helping us acclimatize before heading to higher altitudes. A short trek to the Nagarjuna Hills offers some marvelous views of Mt. Makalu and will also help us to acclimatize. Medical experts recommend being active rather than sit idle during this process of acclimatization.

From Dingboche it is only a short trek to Chhukung, the final settlement of the Khumbu region around Imja Tse (also known as Island Peak) with its magnificent panoramic views of snowcapped mountains with Mt. Makalu in the east. After arriving at Chhukung we can rest or hike to Chhukung Ri for more astonishing views of the mountains. It will also allow us time to prepare for our early morning departure to Kongma-la Pass.

Before dawn we follow the trail along an icy path and then on a stony trail beneath Kongma La Pass and Kongma Peak– also known as Mera Peak. We then cross over Kongma La Pass at (5,535m) that is wedged between Mt Nuptse Wall, Mohare and Pokalde peaks. After a hard climb towards Khumbu Glacier and moraine (rocky ground) we have a fairly steep trail up to the base of the Khumbu Glacier before arriving at Lobuche where we will stay overnight.

Today we head from Gorak Shep and then cross the moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. On the trail, we pass the signpost pointing to the Italian Pyramid (scientific research center). A little further along the trail, we can see the crest of the north ridge of Everest, as well as Mt. Pumori, Mt. Mahalangur, Mt. Lingtren, Mt. Khumbutse & Mt. Nuptse. A short climb leads us to Thangma Riju from where we have 360-degree panoramic views of the snow-covered mountains. After a steep climb, and crossing the Changri Glacier, we get our first peek of Kala Patthar, a rocky knoll below Mt. Pumori. After reaching Gorakshep we are blessed with a jaw-dropping panorama of the surrounding snow-covered peaks, including Mt. Everest. Upon reaching Mount Everest Base Camp we have time to wander around and ponder over how the early mountaineers felt when considering their climb to the summit. From EBC we head back to Gorak Shep for the night.

An early morning start takes us to Kala Patthar (known as black rock), a well known landmark that offers the most exquisite panoramic view of numerous surrounding peaks, including a close-up of Mt. Everest. We then head back to Gorak Shep and then on to Dzongla situated at the base of Cho La Pass. We will stay at Dzongla the night.

We have another early start to the day as we trek to Thangnak where we get a magnificent view of Mt Cholatse (6440m). The trek heads in a westerly direction from Dzongla. Today is the hardest day of our trek as we ascend to Cho La Pass (5420m). On reaching the highest point of the valley we trek through Cho La Pass taking in some of the most beautiful views of Chola Lake and Mt. Amadablam. The climbing today can be quite hard going due to it being rugged and with rocks glazed over with ice. Upon reaching the top of the pass we then ascend to Thangnak for the night.

And yet another early morning start as we begin our trek to the small village of Gokyo at the base of Mt Gokyo. On the trail, we have some incredible mountain views. After leaving Longponga (4720m) we continue uphill on a trail that leads to Gokyo that has an astonishing view of Tanjung Tsho Lake (4710m). After a short trek along the edge of the Ngozumpa Glacier (36 km is the longest glacier of Nepal), we arrive at Gokyo.

This morning we can climb Gokyo Ri and have some fantastic panoramic views of some of the world’s highest peaks, including Mt. Cho Oyo, Gychung Kang, Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Cholatse, Tawache and Mt. Makalu in the east. This is truly one of the highlights of this trek.  We will then descend to Gokyo Lake. Another option is a trek to Gokyo’s 5th lake that will take around 5 hours and will take us to the very base of Mt. Cho Oyu - the world’s 6th highest mountain situated on the border with Tibet. From here we will also have views of Mt. Everest, Changtse and the enormous ice wall of Cho-Oyu.

Up before dawn again we head off to our final high pass following the trail at the end of Gokyo Lake at which point we are again able to see several enormous snow-covered peaks: Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Cholatse and Taboche before crossing through Renjo La Pass. This is also one of the most physically demanding days of our trek, but once we arrive at the top of the pass we will have spectacular 360-degree views of Mt. Cho-Oyu and other peaks. After a short break, we continue on the trail to the frozen lakes below Renjo La Pass before heading on a long downhill trek to the small village of Lundgren – close to Nangpa-La Pass where we will stay at a teahouse overnight.

This morning we head along a trail used for centuries by the Tibetan traders to Thame Village. We first pass Bhote Koshi, and then come to Taranga Village. At Thame we have some more incredible views of Thamserku, Katanga and Kusum Kanguru. We then head across the suspension bridge arriving at Samde where we head down a steep path to Thame Village which is home to a Khari Gompa (Buddhist monastery) for nuns. Finally we arrive at Namche Bazaar where we will stay overnight.

Today is the final day on the trail of the Everest Three high pass trek. Today we leave Namche Bazaar and head to Lukla. It is nearly all downhill and is hard on the legs. Tonight we will stay at a teahouse in Lukla.

Immediately after breakfast, we head back to Kathmandu after our long and tiring mountain adventure. After arriving at Kathmandu we will take you to your 3-star hotels in Thamel where you can finally put your feet up and relax.

Today you will leave Nepal with some wonderful memories of your Everest Three Pass trek. A representative from Sherpa Expedition and Trekking will take you to the airport at least three hours prior to your departure. On your journey home you can start planning another great adventure to this mountainous country.

GOOD TO KNOW

Accommodation

You will be accommodating in a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu. During the trek teahouses/lodges are readily available. Due to excellent infrastructure, the teahouse of this trek is relative of high quality but at the higher elevation or up ahead from the Namche, you will not be able to find a standard accommodation, the rooms are basic normally with a bed, blankets and a pillow.

Meals and Drinks during the trek

Breakfast will be served in Kathmandu and all meals (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner) are included during your trek in the Himalayas. The teahouses of this trek are quite standard and serve you authentic Nepalese food and International cuisines too (Tibetan, Indian, Continental, etc.). Please carry water purifying pills as you get to have stream water also note that you have an option of buying bottled water.

Physical Fitness and Difficulty Level

The Three Passes Trek is highly rated as a challenging trek than the classic Everest Base Camp Trek so this trek is suitable for trekkers who have had past experience of trekking, this does not mean you need to be an athlete’s or marathon runner. However, the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy it. This may sound difficult to the first time trekkers, who are concerned that they won’t keep up; all you need to do is walking, jogging, cycling, and hiking near the valley before embarking.

Altitude Sickness

Trekking in the higher elevation is physically demanding than trekking in the lower elevation. Going up at higher elevation too fast causes altitude sickness, it generally happens when your body fails to adapt to the decreasing amount of oxygen available on high altitude as we ascend higher above 2500m.

Prevention of Altitude Sickness

  • Allow your body to have sufficient time for acclimatization.
  • Do not travel alone, take a guide or travel with a group of people.
  • Say no to alcohol, sleeping pills, and smoking.
  • At least drink 3 to 4 liters of clean water a day.
  • Do not make rapid ascend.
  • Avoid getting cold.

Don't skip the acclimatization days. Better to continue with Diamox (if any symptoms show up). Drink Garlic Soup.
