Everest Three High pass Trek 21 Days

This trek is a stunning adventure into the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Sagarmatha National Park region of Nepal. It is a physically tough 18-day trek crossing three high altitude passes - Renjo La Pass (5388 m), Cho La Pass (5380 m) and Kongma La Pass (5535 m); trekking through scenic valleys of Khumbu, Bhotekoshi, Gokyo, and Imja Tse; and incredible views.  We will also climb to Mt. Gokyo Ri (5483m), Kala Pathar (5545m) and Chukung (5550m) before we arrive at Everest Base Camp – the launch-pad to the world’s highest peak Mt Everest (8848m).

We will visit the turquoise blue Gokyo Lakes (4,700–5,000m); Mt. Gokyo Ri (5357m); and visit the remote trading route between Nepal and Tibet - Nangpa La Pass. We will also visit the large Sherpa village of Marlung (4260m) and the Thame Tibetan Buddhist Monastery – the oldest in the Khumbu region, thought to have its origins in the 17th century. The monastery sits 200 meters above Thame Village on the side of Sumdur Mountain. Imagine yourself surrounded by snow-covered mountains, amidst alpine glaciers and a chance to see the elusive snow leopard, musk deer and red panda.

Lukla is the usual starting point, but if you have more time then you can start from Jiri, Lukla, Phaplu or Salleri. It is a challenging ascent to Dingboche (4410m), Kongma-La Pass (5535m) via Tengboche (3860 m) and Kongma La Pass (5550m). The views from these places are breathtaking. Kongma La Pass is the highest of the three passes. From Dingboche we ascend to higher elevations and after crossing Khongma La Pass via High Camp we reach Lobuche (4910 m) and then Gorakshep (5140m). Gorakshep is the intersection where the trail heads to Kala Patthar and Everest Base Camp. For the best views of Mt. Everest we trek up to the well-known vantage point at Kala Patthar (5644m) - also referred to as ‘black rock”. It is all downhill from here as we head back to Gorakshep and on to Everest Base Camp (5360m) via Gorak Shep (5164m) At EBC we can view the Khumbu Glacier, the world’s highest and one that climbers have to navigate through on their way to Mt. Everest.

From EBC we descend to Lobuche and then to Cho La Pass (5420m), the most difficult of the three passes - starting near Lobuche Kharka and going through to Thangnak. On the trek to Thangnak Kharka via Dzongla (4830m) we view Awi Peak (5245m), Lobuche Peak, Nirekha Peak and other mountains. We then head to Gokyo via the Gokyo Valley with its many lakes, and then ascend to Gokyo Ri (5420m) said to be the best viewpoint in the entire Himalayas. After leaving Gokyo Ri we head to High Camp via Renjo La Pass 5360m. As with Gokyo Ri, Renjo La Pass also provides incredible views of the Himalayan Ranges. After leaving High Camp we descend to Thame via Lungden (4380m) and Marlung (4210 m). Further down we come to Lukla, via Namche Bazaar, having completed the round-trip trek through the three high passes.

This is without doubt one of the best and more all-inclusive treks in the Everest region. This trek is suited to those who are physically fit and prepared to push themselves and reach these far-flung places and enjoy the challenge of crossing the three high altitude passes. The best time of year to do this trek is in autumn (Sept to November) and spring (March to May) when there is less snow that may make trekkin more difficult.

Sherpa Teams will attend to permits, food and accommodation on the trail.

ITINERARY

A representative from Sherpa Expedition & Trekking will greet you at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport and take you to your hotel in Thamel, a bustling and thriving tourist hub of Kathmandu. On arrival at your hotel there will be a briefing regarding your Everest Three Passes trek and our representative will provide you with a route map and other useful information. No meals included today.

After breakfast at your hotel, we will begin our tour of the city. Your guide will pick you up in a vehicle and take you to Bouddhanath Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist temples in the world, where we will see Buddhist monks in prayer in the monasteries and around the stupa. We will then visit Pashupatinath, the most famous Hindu temple in Nepal, located on the banks of the holy Bagmati River. Here Hindu holy men (sadhus) sit in meditation, pilgrim’s bath in the river and sometimes we will see funeral pyres burning on the ghats. Our next stop is at Bhaktapur Durbar Square, which is a collection of pagoda and shikhara – style temples that encompass a fifty-five window palace constructed of brick and wood. Bhaktapur Durbar Square is also remembered by the Lion Gate, the Golden gate and the palace of fifty-five windows, various art galleries and a statue of King Bhupatindra Malla. We will stay in Kathmandu tonight at 3 star hotel.

This morning we head off to the airport and have a 35-minute flight to Lukla and land on a narrow tarmac overlooking the Dudh Koshi River. The trek then takes us through terraced farmlands of the Sherpas and through several villages. Many Sherpas earn a living solely from providing support to trekkers and climbers. We will also pass many Mani stones, which are stones carved in Tibetan script, and of course, pass the ever-present colorful Tibetan prayer flags scattered along the trail.  We will then arrive at our lodge located on the banks of the Dudh Koshi River.

Today we cross the Dudh Koshi River and later we will have to show our trekking permit at the Sagarmatha National Park office in Monju - the official entrance to World Heritage Listed Sagarmatha National Park. We then climb to Namche Bazaar after crossing the Hillary Suspension Bridge. We will stay in Namche Bazaar overnight.

Today it is imperative that we spend time acclimatizing before heading higher.  Health experts recommend we stay active and on the move during the day. Today we can take a hike to Thame or visit Khunde, or wander around and explore Namche Bazaar – the home to many Sherpas employed in the trekking industry. Namche Bazaar is the business center of the Everest (Khumbu) region and has government offices, ATMs, Internet cafes, shops, restaurants, a bakery, and a lively market each Friday evening and Saturday. If we choose to take a more vertical trek during the day it will help us to better acclimatize. Our guide will also take us to the Tourist Visitor Center near the headquarter of the Sagarmatha National Park where we can see a selection of artifacts related to the first Everest climbers, and learn more about the Sherpa culture and flora and fauna of this region.

Today on the trail to Tengboche we have some incredible views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt Ama Dablam, and Thamserku. The trail zigzags through the hills until we arrive at Tengboche where we will stay the night at a teahouse.

On the trail today we pass various Chortens and Mani walls and a number of small villages. We will stop for lunch at a village that has a reputation for itself by serving delicious food. In the afternoon we head north to Pheriche - or can follow an eastward trail beneath the lofty north face of Mt Ama Dablam. The trail is easy-going as we enter the Imja Valley that slowly widens as we get nearer to the Lobuche River. We will then descend to the river before a steep ascent up to Dingboche. Dingboche is remarkable in that its fields are surrounded by stone walls that protect them from grazing animals and strong winds. The fields are planted in crops of barley, buckwheat, and potatoes.

Today is another very important day on the trek and is set aside to help us acclimatize before heading to higher altitudes. A short trek to the Nagarjuna Hills affords some magnificent views of Mt. Makalu and will also help us to better acclimatize. Medical experts recommend being active rather than sitting idle during this acclimatization process.

The trail from Dingboche is quite a short distance from Chhukung, that happens to be the last settlement of the Khumbu region around Imja Tse (also known as Island Peak), with its outstanding panoramic views of snow covered mountains and with Mt. Makalu in the east. After coming to Chhukung we can either rest or trek to Chhukung Ri for more incredible views of the surrounding snow clad mountains. It will also better prepare us before our early morning trek to Kongma La Pass.

Before sunrise, we head out on the trail along an icy and rocky path beneath Kongma La Pass and Kongma Peak– also known as Mera Peak. We then cross Kongma La Pass at (5,535m) that sits jammed between Mt Nuptse Wall, Mohare and Pokalde peaks. After a physically tough climb to Khumbu Glacier and moraine (rocky ground), we will arrive at Lobuche where we will stay the night.

Today we take the trail from Gorakshep and cross the moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. A little further down the trail we can see the crest of the north ridge of Mt. Everest, as well as Mt. Pumori, Mt. Mahalangur, Mt. Lingtren, Mt. Khumbutse & Mt. Nuptse. A short ascent takes us to Thangma Riju from where we have 360-degree panoramic views of the snow-covered mountains. After a steep ascent, and crossing the Changri Glacier, we get our first look at Kala Patthar, a rocky black knoll situated below Mt. Pumori. After reaching Gorakshep we have more panoramic views of the surrounding snow-covered peaks - including Mt. Everest. Upon reaching EBC we have time to explore and chew over how the early mountaineers felt when preparing themselves physically and mentally for their climb to the summit. From EBC we head return to Gorakshep for the night.

An early morning start to the day takes us to Kala Patthar (known as a black rock), a famous landmark and view point in the region that offers the most outstanding panoramic view of numerous surrounding peaks - including a close-up of Mt. Everest. We then head back to Gorakshep for breakfast and will then continue down do Dzongla where we will stay the night at a teahouse.

This morning we wake up to a fantastic view of Mt. Cholatse. We then have a tough slog to Dzongla and then descend to the basin. Climbing up from here we have views of Chola Lake and Mount Ama Dablam. The steep climb is littered with boulders as we head to Bergschrund. At the top of Cho La Pass (5420m), we have more amazing mountain peaks. The descent to Dragnag is much easier going unless the rocks are covered over with ice that will make this a little more slippery and treacherous going. We will stay at a teahouse at Dragnag tonight.

This morning we leave this small village and head across the Ngozumpa Glacier that happens to be the longest glacier in Khumbu Region. As we reach the far side of the glacier we can see the second Gokyo Lake - which is one of six lakes. At the edge of the third lake, we can see Gokyo Valley. We will stay the night here at a teahouse.

This morning we climb to Gokyo Ri and have some fantastic panoramic views of some of the world’s highest peaks: Mt. Cho Oyo, Gychung Kang, Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Cholatse, Tawache and Mt. Makalu in the east. This is definitely one of the highlights on this trek.  We will then head down to Gokyo Lake. Another option is a trek to Gokyo’s 5th lake that will take approximately 5 hours and will lead us to the foot of Mt. Cho Oyu - the world’s 6th highest mountain situated very close to the Tibetan border. From here we will also have views of Mt. Everest, Changtse and the massive glacier of Cho-Oyu.

We are up before dawn again and follow the trail to the final high pass that begins at the end of Gokyo Lake from where we are again able to see several massive snow-covered peaks: Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Cholatse, and Taboche before crossing through Renjo La Pass. This is also one of the most physically challenging days of our trek, but once we get to the top of the pass we will have glorious 360-degree views of Mt. Cho-Oyu and other snow-capped peaks. After a short break, we head to the frozen lakes below Renjo La Pass before having a long descent to the small village of Lundgren – close to Nangpa La Pass where we will stay at a teahouse tonight.

This morning we first head off to Thame village, passing Bhote Koshi and then descending to Taranga and finally to Langmuche Khola (river). At this point, we can see Thamserku, Katanga, and Kusum Kanguru from the teahouse. Thame also hosts a famous Buddhist Gompa (temple). We then follow the trail to Samde, another place from where we have stunning mountain views. From here we head down a steep trail to Thame Village where there is Khari Gompa – a Buddhist monastery and nunnery. Our trail continues past mani walls, chortens, and the ever-present Tibetan prayer flags before arriving at Namche Bazaar.

Today is our final day of the Everest three high pass trek. Today we leave Namche Bazaar and head to Lukla via Phakding. Notwithstanding that it is all downhill,  it is hard on the legs. Tonight we will stay at a teahouse in Lukla.

Shortly after breakfast, we head back to Kathmandu after our long and grueling mountain adventure. After arriving at Kathmandu we will take you to your 3-star hotels in Thamel where you can sit back and relax. If you are thinking of extending your stay in Nepal there are several options, such as a visit to Chitwan National Park, known for wildlife viewing, and to Pokhara – Nepal’s second-largest city and its famous– Phew Tal (lake). You will stay at a 3-star hotel tonight in Kathmandu.

Today is a rest day – and well earned too! You may opt for a massage or wander around Thamel City and buy souvenirs before heading home. You may also visit the Garden of Dreams where you can sit in a parkland setting and relax. This is also a spare day in the event we cannot fly from Lukla due to adverse weather. This evening we have a farewell dinner where you can say your goodbyes to your guide and fellow trekkers. Tonight we will again stay at a 3-star hotel.

Your three high pass trekking adventure and time in Nepal ends today. A representative from Sherpa Expedition and Trekking will drop you at the airport at least three hours prior to your scheduled departure. We hope that before your next visit you will contact us and allow us to take you into the marvelous Himalayan Mountains.

GOOD TO KNOW

Accommodation

You will be accommodating in a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu. During the trek teahouses/lodges are readily available. Due to excellent infrastructure, the teahouse of this trek is relative of high quality but at the higher elevation or up ahead from the Namche, you will not be able to find a standard accommodation, the rooms are basic normally with a bed, blankets and a pillow.

Meals and Drinks during the trek

Breakfast will be served in Kathmandu and all meals (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner) are included during your trek in the Himalayas. The teahouses of this trek are quite standard and serve you authentic Nepalese food and International cuisines too (Tibetan, Indian, Continental, etc.). Please carry water purifying pills as you get to have stream water also note that you have an option of buying bottled water.

Physical Fitness and Difficulty Level

The Three Passes Trek is highly rated as a challenging trek than the classic Everest Base Camp Trek so this trek is suitable for trekkers who have had past experience of trekking, this does not mean you need to be an athlete’s or marathon runner. However, the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy it. This may sound difficult to the first time trekkers, who are concerned that they won’t keep up; all you need to do is walking, jogging, cycling, and hiking near the valley before embarking.

Altitude Sickness

Trekking in the higher elevation is physically demanding than trekking in the lower elevation. Going up at higher elevation too fast causes altitude sickness, it generally happens when your body fails to adapt to the decreasing amount of oxygen available on high altitude as we ascend higher above 2500m.

Prevention of Altitude Sickness

  • Allow your body to have sufficient time for acclimatization.
  • Do not travel alone, take a guide or travel with a group of people.
  • Say no to alcohol, sleeping pills, and smoking.
  • At least drink 3 to 4 liters of clean water a day.
  • Do not make rapid ascend.
  • Avoid getting cold.

Our itinerary has been specially tailored to prevent any kind of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) while moving up to higher altitudes. Normally, altitude sickness starts from 3,600 meters and above. You will be trekking at a relatively slow and gradual pace as part of the acclimatization process. Cut off caffeinated, alcoholic and smoking items. Drink at least 4 liters of water a day. Trek slow. Don't skip the acclimatization days. Better to continue with Diamox (if any symptoms show up). Drink Garlic Soup. In the higher elevation, there is less oxygen in the air and this is more so while crossing high passes. Our expert guides will advise you on how to avoid AMS and treat it when/ if required.

During trekking, you will be served meals in the teahouses. Typical meals are noodles, rice, pasta or potato dishes along with vegetables and egg/chicken/meat dishes. Other items mostly served as breakfasts include Tibetan, egg, pancake, bread, porridge, muesli, and toasts with peanut butter and honey.
