DHAULAGIRI EXPEDITION

Sparkling like a multi-faceted diamond in the sky!

You are entitled to boast about it if you have climbed Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167m/26,795ft), the 6th highest mountain in the world.  Mt.Dhaulagiri is a true giant, and this is because its mass towers 7000m above the depths of the Kali Gandaki Valley - that happens to be the deepest gorge in the world. This mountain has been both exhilarating, for those that reached the summit and disappointing for those that failed. It can be a wild and stormy climb to the peak. It is definitely only for experienced climbers and not for novices. There are several routes to the summit, but all require some technical skills, physical and mental challenges.

Your success in reaching the summit is largely reliant on planning and excellent logistical support. Sherpa Expedition & Trekking has more than 40 years of organizing trekking and climbing expeditions and leaves nothing to chance. We never take unnecessary risks and all climbing guides are professional and licensed by the Nepal government.

Mt. Dhaulagiri is part of the Dhaulagiri massif in Nepal extends 120 km (70 mi) from the Kaligandaki River and west to the Bheri River. The mountain's name is derived from the Sanskrit word “dhawala” meaning dazzling, white, or beautiful and “giri” meaning mountain. Mt. Dhaulagiri is located in the northwest of the Myagdi district in mid west Nepal.

The usual way to the peak is along the North East Ridge, often referred to as the “standard route”. It has two prominent faces, one on the south and the other on the west side of the mountain. The Base Camp is usually around 4750m with several higher altitude camps around 5850m, Camp 2 at 6400m and the last camp at 7400m. There is an extended climbing period that ensures you have practiced before the final assault on the summit, and most importantly you have had time to acclimatize. This and the often unpredictable weather and avalanches are what stop you from reaching the summit. Accurate weather forecasts are paramount on any serious expedition such as this. Local Sherpa guides are also hugely important in predicting and reading the weather on the mountain.

The base camp is typically set at around 4,750m, and after that three camps pursue before arriving at the top. The principal camp is at 5,850m, Camp 2 is at 6400m, and the last camp is at 7400m.

Sherpa Expedition and Trekking’s Sherpa guides (well known for their climbing skills) will do everything within their power to lead you safely to the summit. Our guides are government certified and experienced climbers. We take no chances with your well-being and hence have allowed several days to make up for unforeseen circumstances, such as adjusting to higher altitudes and the possibility of altitude sickness. The only thing we cannot guarantee is the weather. This is in the hands of the Gods!
