Here is an escape from the more crowded trekking destinations. A recently opened Mohare Danda (3313m) is the perfect alternative. On the trail, you will stay in community-owned lodges or homestay giving you a more personal understanding and appreciation of the local traditions and lives of the people living in this region.
The Mohare Danda Trek in the foothills of the Annapurna Region is also known as the Eco-Lodge Community Trek. This region is rich in fauna and flora with dense pine, oak, and bamboo forests – especially rhododendron forests and their magnificent pink, white and red flowers that are in bloom during spring. From a vantage point of over 3000 meters you will have spectacular panoramic views of many enormous mountain ranges in the Himalayas , such as the 120 km long Dhaulagiri Massif and the Annapurna Massif –(comprising of one peak over 8000 metres, thirteen peaks over 7000 metres, and sixteen more over 6000 metres). This is a cultural journey that brings you in direct contact with local families in Magar and Gurung villages.
Trekkers will value the unique culture and robustness of the villagers living in this isolated region of Nepal. Their genuine smiles are contagious and their kindheartedness second to none. The focus on this trek is to protect the natural environment and to give trekkers a sense of being part of the community when they stay with families in this amazing location.
The Mohare Danda Trek is an ideally suited short trek for individuals and families beginning at Pokhara before heading into the unbelievably beautiful Annapurna region. Sherpa Expedition Teams will take care of all paperwork i.e. permits, as well as all meals and accommodation on the trek.
Sherpa Expedition & Trekking staff will be there to greet you at Tribhuvan International Airport and take you to your hotel, followed by a briefing covering information, dos and don’ts of your trek. Your safety and comfort are paramount.
Our journey begins with a 6-7 hour drive toward the Pokhara Valley and its beautiful Phewa Tal (lake) and then checking in to your hotel close to Phewa Tal. There is plenty to see and do along Lakeside with its many shops, bars and restaurants to choose from.
After breakfast we will drive to Beni and on to Galeshwor, about a 3 hour drive and from here we begin our trek. We first cross the bridge over the Kali Gandaki River and then follow the trail ascending to Bans Kharka. Tonight we will stay at a community eco-lodge.
Breakfast, lunch & dinner included.
Today we have an opportunity to explore the village of Nangi and watch and learn how the villagers grow and attend to their organic farms, and promote organic farming through an organic school. Nangi is also a place where they make hand-made paper – another interesting aspect of how they have minimal impact on the environment. Tonight we stay at a community lodge.
Breakfast, lunch & dinner included.
Today we begin our trek by passing through rhododendron, oak and bamboo forests on our way to Mohare Danda ridge. From the ridge we are blessed with some awesome views of the surrounding mountains – especially at sunrise as the colors reflect off the snow-capped peaks. Tonight we stay at a community lodge.
Breakfast, lunch & dinner included.
An early morning start to the day and the crisp mountain air rewards us with a spectacular sunrise view of the surrounding landscape and the constantly changing light adding to the experience. Today is a leisurely trek and before long we reach the tranquil Danda Kharka, located in the middle of a forested area. Tonight we stay at a community lodge.
Breakfast, lunch & dinner included.
Today the trail takes us over the Khumnu Khola (river). After arriving at Ghandruk we have beautiful views of Annapurna South (7219m), Gangapurna (7455m), Annapurna III (7555m), Machapuchare (6993m - FishTail) and Hiunchuli (6441m). Ghandruk Village is set on the side of a mountain and has a majestic backdrop of several enormous peaks. Ghandruk is surrounded by lush forests and has many terraced agricultural plots.
Our final day trekking takes us downhill passing the teahouses at Ghandruk and continuing along the stony trail with terraced farms beside us. We then follow the trail through Birethanti and Nayapul and continue along the trail alongside the Modi Khola (river – 50km in length) before we reach Nayapul at which point we will drive to Pokhara.
Today we head back on a 6 to 7 hour drive to Kathmandu with many fond memories of Nepal and its unique culture and geography. These memories will last a lifetime!
Sherpa Expeditions & Trekking staff will transfer you to the airport for your final departure from Nepal. We hope that this epic trek will be firmly ingrained in your memory and will be enough to prompt you to consider your next trek with us!
The following information will give you some idea about what you need to bring for the trek. It is important you do not forget the essential items, as this will determine your comfort and safety on the trek. Equally important is that you do not burden yourself with unnecessary equipment on the trek.
Toiletries (tissues, toilet paper, moisturizer, lip balm, sunscreen, sanitary pads, hand sanitizer, nail clippers, a small mirror, toothbrush, toothpaste, glasses, contacts, etc.)
You will be accommodated in 3-star hotels in Kathmandu. During the trek, we will be staying at lodges/ teahouses. You may find comfortable and better quality Eco lodge/hoestay- having attached bathroom at lower levels- until you reach higher elevations, where the accommodation is more basic with bare necessities.
In Kathmandu, your hotel includes breakfast, whereas all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be provided during the trek. A staple food of the Manang & Mustang regions is potatoes, oats, buckwheat, Sherpa stew, and Tibetan bread. Sherpa’s’ started farming potatoes when the first seeds were introduced to the region in the early 90s. There is a limited choice of food at higher elevations and except many potato dishes. Potatoes are high in carbohydrates – an excellent source of energy needed at high altitudes.
Transportation
We use a private car for sightseeing and for the airport to hotel pick and drop off. We use public transportation or local buses during the trek.
This can be a challenging trek where you often have to walk 6-7 hours a day. You don’t need past experience of hiking or trekking but if you have done any kind of trekking activities then it is always a plus! We have met people from all walks of life, shapes, and sizes who have completed the trek. The only difficult part is when altitude sickness strikes and the effect that it can have on your body. Before leaving for Nepal it is good if you can prepare yourself physically by increasing your stamina and oxygen intake.
